FOAK - online PC bit retailers..

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Phil Launchbury, Jul 10, 2006.

  1. OK - who do people recommend?

Seeing as how Novatech have let me down (promised delivery last
Saturday, bits didn't show up & no explanation).

    I'm looking for:

    AMD64 x2 (4Gz)
    2G RAM
    Decent m/b
    Graphics card

All to replace my main home desktop seeing as the current one has
    coil-shuffled big-stylee.

Always use them for bits and bobs.

But only 'cos they're <10 miles away from me, so they're handy.

Yeah, I've bought a couple of bits from them too, fast and easy service.
They are just about the cheapest for disc drives and such like.

Last time I upgraded I bought the bits from www.pcnextday.co.uk they
were very quick and their prices are quite reasonable.

There will be price cuts soon on the socket 939 chips as AMD are moving over
to the AM2 socket to use the DDR2 memory.

If I was ordering *tonight* I would recommend an OEM AMD Athlon 64 2x 3800+
    (OEM is £170 - retail is 211), a DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra D (£88.07),
    Corsair Value select PC3200 DDR 2 x 1Gb kit (£135.07) and either a Leadtek
    7900GT or an Asus 7300GT [1] all from www.overclockers.co.uk .

An excellent CPU cooler is the Artic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro which can be had
from www.shinyhardware.co.uk for a paltry £21 inc vat and ND delivery, still
£20 cheaper than the diff you pay between OEM and retail for the CPU. This
will keep it nice and cool when that 3800+ hits 2.5Ghz.

The best other bang for buck chip out there is Intels pentuim D 805. 2.66GHz
out of the box on a good motherboard they are hitting 3.4Ghz extremely
easily with no need for expensive memory etc just a good CPU cooler. Again
shinyhardware has the Freezer 7 Pro for this. A 3.4GHz dual core pentium 4
for £85 is not to be sniffed at. Have one of these sitting here waiting to
    be used.

[1] Depends if you are into playing games - big money to be saved here if
you don't, on PSU aswell as gfx card.
