I noticed this evening that the numberplate on the BMW is filthy. It's
covered with greasy muck and is almost unreadable. What's the best method
for getting it spotlessly clean? I was thinking of trying a jetwash to get
the worst of it off, followed by hot, soapy water and a sponge, but I don't
know if this will cause any damage to the surface. Also, is there any sort
of lacquer or treatment (Rain-X?) that will help to prevent this build-up of
    dirt in future?

It is *extremely* dangerous to attempt to clean the plate.

The sudden glare from the highly reflective surface would inevitably
dazzle you, causing you to careen into a bus queue. Of nuns. Bouncing
off that, you would mow down an entire class of five year old disabled
(yet curiously cute) children before colliding with Elsie Marples (97),
    grandmother of 763 delightful babies.

    Leave it!

I have no idea. So far this is a situation I have only encountered on
the car, and one I have surrendered to because mileage is futile.

On the bike I suspect spraying it with chain lube might help, as it
flings the dirt off chains.... but it might just get more sticky.

    Internally or externally?
What, the whole bike? Isn't that a little extreme?

I doubt I could convincingly use chain lube on a BMW.

Just do the same as you do with your underpants - that'll give you a
few months grace till you have to bin it & buy a new one.

Interesting idea, but the numberplate lacks the necessary straps, tie-downs,
    hardpoints, nozzles etc.

Nice. I think Sir requires a large new keepnet for Chrimbo.

Ride around in front of a copper or two. You should find that by the
end of the event you'll have a nice, shiny clean plate.

Just wash it off with a warm bucket of fairy liquid, job done, nothing
    fancy... Takes a minute... :)
