we exclusively provide Thinkpads, and our failure rate is actually
down for the Lenovos compared to when they were IBM branded. It's the
    same factory, surely?

    for end clients sure.

We tend to "recycle" older laptops to go into a pool for
    presentations.

in fact, I've just requisitioned 6 T42s from "old stock" to go into
this pool (currently supplying the T6x series to new clients). The
T42s are absolutely fine for this purpose, despite being 3-4 years
    old.

In fact, some of the old presentation laptops are X23s and whilst not
actually "still going strong" are at least "still going" at ~8 years
old, which is a good measure of the durability of the things.

I have one, and love it.

I kinda wished I'd waited for the 10" model that's due out soon, as it
    looks a bit better.

good point. However, personally, I've had one IBM and 2 Lenovo
Thinkpads over the last 6 years (Originally had a T42, then very
temporariliy an X60 and now a T61). I've had no bother with any of
them. And we have a far higher failure rate with the Dells we use as
workstations than with the Thinkpads (of which we have >650 currently
in use across the company). This makes them "feel" a lot more reliable
than laptops I've used in the past...
....but of course this is part of the reason that my Thinkpad feels
much more reliable to the Dell or Compaq machines I had circa 2000.

I don't think there will be much difference except for the screen
and it having built-in Bluetooth and possibly 3G. I think the screen
on the current one is fine (I was impressed at the sharpness/quality)
and I worry that Acer will put a bigger screen in, increase the size
of the case, make it heavier, etc, which kinda misses the point.

Oh sure, the screen on mine is in fact fine - the only real thing I
don't like is the touchpad buttons being either side, rather than
below, and they're in the "right" place on the new one.

I agree. I've put ubuntu 8.10 on mine, with the netbook remix. /var /tmp
and swapspace are all on partitions on a 16Gb SD-HC leaving 12 Gb for
data - reduces wear and tear on the SSD. £5 got me a tiny bluetooth
dongle which, with my phone, gives me GPRS net access. All for £148
    delivered. I love it!

Meh. Buy yourself a usb mouse then. Or steal one from work, like
    everyone else does.

Actually, I bought a usb 800dpi mouse from Asda, of all places,
for the HTPC and it's *really* nice.

Yeah, you wouldn't want some lap-totty when they've got a mouse in.

I finished my degree last year, and anyone turning up with a laptop to type
notes on would have been regarded as a flash twat. IME laptops are used as
desktop computers that are convenient to move between rooms / take back home
by most students. Notes are scribbled in illegible handwriting, or borrowed
from one of your more organised mates, and in the end you just learn the
entire course in the few weeks before your exams...

It's the T60's I've seen die. Might be there was a bad batch, I
    suppose.

well, like I said - the thing's still working, and in daily use-and-
    abuse.

In fact, bearing in mind that this is a machine that doesn't "belong"
to any one, and is shoved in and out of a drawer/ delivered to-and-
from meeting rooms all day long, constantly being plugged in and
unplugged, it's a good sign of the durability that it's been able to
    take this for 8 years.
