This so-called new year's resolution didn't last long, did it? :)

Word has it that student houses are preferable for knocking over, as you'll
potentially have laptop/ipod/hifi/tv/mobile/credit cards etc in every room.

If someone started typing while I was lecturing they'd be out on their
ear! Lecture notes are made with pencil and paper.

Really? I know someone who finished her MSc last year who took notes on
    her lappy.

I'd have thought saying a old knackered machine that won't run Vista was
a 'less desirable item' was totally in the spirit of my NYR :)

The only problem with an ex-corporate PC over here, is that it's likely
to be over three years old, as most companies depreciate IT stuff over
    three years.

Pff, I've had the MoBo changed twice on my 6 month old HP Compaq 2510p
already. Once for the sound card and once for charging issues. I never
had any issues with my IBM.

If you're going to work in the past you may as well demand parchment
    and a quill.

Provided it didn't scratch and distract the other students, that would be
fine too! I guess a roll-up silent keyboard would also be fine.

I helped a blind student in her 1st year at Cardiff. She took notes on a
laptop. Perfect touch typing. She had some software on the machine that
would read the notes back to her as required.

My daughter was told this by the accomodation manager when she first
    went to uni

They probably noticed that they could get more for them on ebay.

My T43 is on it's 2nd HDD and 2nd MOBO and 2nd Battery, so that's
pretty much everything except the keyboard.

Pretty normal in the modern world along with dictaphone equivalents to
    record the lectures.

Seem the same to me. I've had three IBM ones and two Lenovo ones. In
fact, the latest Lenovo T60p[1] is the best so far.

One of the houses I lived in at uni was turned over during the christmas
holiday. Fortunately they only took the big rented tv and my VCR from
the living room, so no biggie.

Netbook? I think the Acer Aspire One is a brilliant bit of kit, and
    does
everything that any "normal" laptop will do. The only thing it's
    missing
is a built-in CD/DVD drive but it has enough USB ports to host one.
    Add
a big USB stick for storing/transferring docs and it'll be fine for
    your
average user. At £180 for the 8Gb Linux, it's a bargain too.
