We used to use WhatsUp Gold as a nice simple and cheap bit of network
monitoring software to do status checks on customers networks and send email
alerts when stuff stops responding. It was straightforward enough to use ,
had a passable GUI and was only a couple of hundred quid to monitor an
unlimited number of devices. We didn't use much beyond scheduled ping tests
but that was fine for what we needed.

That's been discontinued and replaced with WhatsUp Professional which has
more features but costs a lot more (licence costs rise for more devices) and
isn't a patch on SolarWinds Orion which is more user friendly and polished.
Trouble is we do still need something at the lower end of the market , so
can the font suggest some software that will do what we need , not cost much
, and be easy to set up and use.

    Thanks

There's a stack of FOSS network monitoring tools - we're using Nagios in
production in a couple of places. Setup's a bit of a bitch initially,
especially if you want to integrate GUI config and graphing of historical
trends, but once you've got that sussed, it's good.

There's also ZenOSS, Zabbix and a whole bunch of others.
