FOAK - need to recover data from reformatted hard disk...

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Chris N Deuchar, Feb 1, 2007.

  1. I've looked on my backup drive, under the sofa and behind the fridge
but I still can't find some files I thought I'd backed up from my
    previous hard disk.

Foolishly[1] I reformatted the old disk prior to putting it in
storage. No new data was written to it therefore[2] all the old data
might be recoverable from the old (FAT32) partition.

My old copy of 'Lost & Found 1.06' doesn't seem to like either my Zip
drive or my shiny new NTFS disk so I can't use that.

What does the FOAK recommend please?

One of my clients did something similar

Recover my Files did what it said on the tin.
and has done on several other occasions

Took a while, mind. Renaming everything everything afterwards was their
    problem

From just the other day, getdataback (all one word) will sort it. They
do a free trial, which might do the job. There's FAT and NTFS versions
when I last looked at it.

  5. Yes thanks for this, and the other responses. Runtime's Getdataback
did indeed find my missing files, and I was even able to view and
listen to content - but the trial version won't let you do recovery.
Ordinarily I would be quite happy to pay for this sort of thing but,
as I hope it is a one-off, and $120 seemed rather a lot, I naturally
tried to find 'other help' through Google.

The mess of virus-related sites seems to have overwhelmed what used
to a simple 'pikey' solution so I was on the verge of giving up when
I noticed something strange in my file manager. There, lurking
amongst the usual cr*p in the 'My Documents' folder (which I normally
make a point of avoiding) were files with strange names, but of
identical size, to some of the files that had gone missing.

In the twinkling of a mouse, I had copied said files to a USB drive
and opened them on another machine. Magic! These were my 'lost and
not recovered' files found by GetDataBack. All I had to do was rename
them. Even more interesting, it didn't matter what program I tried
to use on the original 'unrecovered' files (some had obscure suffixes
and were no longer registerd file types - even 'Notepad' worked) as
copies still got put in 'My Documents'.

So there we are then. The ultimate pikey solution. No username, no
    registration code, no dosh required.
