FOAK - nasty mechanical noises

I'm convinced that the XJ has enough personality and life to know it's being
replaced (see sig if you REALLY are interested), and enough hatred of me to
    do something about it.

OK, so it starts and runs up ok. But then after not too long, there comes a
nasty chittering noise from somewhere on the RHS of the engine. It's only
there under no/low load, when I accelerate (insofar as it DOES accelerate)
the noise disappears. It's a bit like a scraping/scratching noise, gets
faster when the revs rise but doesn't change tone.

A Wise One suggested clutch springs, but before I start ripping the bike
apart, are there any other thoughts worthy of the name?

    TIA
