    My daughter's, not mine.

"Find six songs which use chords I, IV & V"

Now obviously I could point her at all the 12 bar based songs I know
but a] I'd like to be a little more inventive and b] this is year 8
[12 to 13yrs] so I'd also like to suggest some songs she and her class
    migh have heard of.

She came up with - Scouting For Girls - She's So Lovely. I suggested -
James - Sit Down. I think American Idiot by Green Day qualifies too.

Any other suggestions welcome. The more modern the better.

    Mercy, by Duffy - it's just a 12 bar.

Just about anything by Status Quo or the Ramones? Not modern, but
    still I-IV-V based.

    The first, forth and fifth chords. i.e. *E* - f - g - *A* - *B*

Thus giving you an E A B chord progression as found in 12 bar blues.

IRTA "Just about anything by Status Quo or the Romans?"

I guess the " I-IV-V" plus the "status quo" led me to that.

Or "The lazy man" progression. Still the most useful progression in Western
    music though.

That uses more than just the three chords. Then again, I suppose Cane
    didn't specify *just* those three.

    I'm not. I can't play a note. [1]

    Cheers,

    Paul.

[1] I can sing a reasonable tune though.

<A three chord trick folkie writes>

I always thought it was just a case of the progression (tonic and all
that music theory stuff), and that you could play 12 bar blues in any
key - though E is the 'classic' ?

In pub sessions round here the magic three are G,C,D - but not 12 bar
progressions. You can play for ages thrashing away on those in
approximately the right order and never repeat the same song. Though to
do some properly you need to throw in the odd Am or Em.

You're only short the knowledge to write down what you already know how
to plan and apply then. a few music theory classes and lots of the
music I could already play suddenly made a lot of sense.
