FOAK: Music -> Computer

  1. Right. Let's suppose a ham-fisted **** is slowly becoming marginally
less ham-fisted at the guitar. Let's suppose he might want to record his
appalling attempts. He has a PC.

How does he get the guitar into his PC and record it? What
    hardware/software does he need?

My friend would like to know.

    With a Behringer U-CONTROL UCA202

    Should do you fine.

Reaper is free and the UCA should cost around 20 quid.

I have a friend who sometimes borrows his son's Korg 4 track cassette
recorder with built in guitar effects and evryfink. Been known to lay
down a Yamaha drum machine track, then a bass track, then rhythm, and
saddest of all then try to do a Hank Marvin. He does at least have the
decency not to connect the line out to his PC's line in.

If it's an electric guitar, use a cable which has a standard jack on
one end, and a mini-jack on the other and simply plug it into your
sound card. If you need to use a microphone, you'll need either a
small mixer (which is what I use), which will cost a bit, or one of
the microphone-to-USB devices, or a better sound card which'll take a
    phono jack.

Software - lots available to download for free but costs after trial
period. The only free one I know about is Audacity.

  7. I've got a brand new - unused - still in its box UCA202 you can have
    for £15.

I use a Roland / Edirol UA-4FX instead now (it was free !)

But would it be useful to WUN?

The results from plugging an electric guitar straight into the mic in of a
sound card will be disappointing. The lines aren't matched so you'll lose
most of the tone and struggle with clipping etc. A better solution is to
take the output from a typical multi effects pedal into the line in. I
picked up a Podstudio thingummy from Toys'rus last year for £9.95 (reduced
from £90). In the box was an M-audio USB interface which you *can* plug a
guitar straight into and get good results (recording quality wise - not my
playing!). I think that is the way to go for WUN and I'd probably grab the
    USB interface from Brownz.

Heh, I've taken to listening to Flemish radio in the office, in an
effort to improve my comprehension skills, and I was quite taken aback
to hear "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" on daytime radio.

  17. Just a note, you'll either need an adaptor that converts from 6.5mm
guitar lead jack to RCA jack or a lead that has a 6.5 jack on one end
and an RCA on the other. I'd be inclined to go for the adaptor. I
don't know what suppliers you have near you, but it should only cost
    around 3 quid.
