My daughter has somehow installed/activated some hideous shit onto MSN
Messenger on her laptop which causes the text she types to appear
animated with loads of emoticons and other bollocks. This means if she
sends someone a message it's almost unreadable.

I can't for the life of me find how to switch this off or uninstall
    this infuriating addon.

    Clues?

Change the text type to standard?

Might be an animated font etc.

  3. Sounds like customised emoticons - ie she types LOL and gets some
    stupid --__--**LOL**--__-- crap.

No idea how to remove them, as I haven't used MSN for eons but maybe
you can figure it out by looking at emoticons.

Ahem. You omitted Mint! FFS, standards are slipping around here.

Anyway, the right answer is not to use MSN at all.

To the OP, use Pidgin <http://www.pidgin.im/> instead.

Go to the right hand side top of the main messenger window and click
the icon with the down and right arrows. Select 'Tools', select
'options', select 'messages' and then uncheck the 'Show custom
    emoticons' tab

The only other option is to highlite each and every one of them as they
appear and delete them after right clicking on them. One of my kids did
the same to my laptop and I locked her in the office at their house
until she'd cleared the fucking lot from my msn.

Uninstall the whole fucking lot and install Trillian.

    Sorted.

    Messenger is bollocks.

    Cheers,

Go to menu Tools then select Emoticons. Should bring up a panel showing,
oddly enough, emoticons. Highlight the ones you need to remove then
click on Remove. Might have to exit messenger then sign in again for it
    to work. Should work.

  16. Worked for me, a couple of years ago.
I still have a basic older MSN installation which is free of all that
crap and it goes fine. Bastards keep wanting me to update though, and
that's why I put Trillian on.

I'm working on it now. Kids have a tendency to install all manner of
flowery addons apps and shit which slows the whole thing down. Spybot
and Malwarebytes are currently on a killing spree.

Yea, same for me, I went over to Trillian, as I was on Windows 2000
and it wanted me to download the latest MSN version, so it did, but
that version didn't work with Win2K, so it was hosed.

It looks like a cynical ploy to force you to upgrade windows, as the
messenger version that supposedly does work on W2K insisted on
    downloading that version of messenger.

Trillian works fine on W2K. I've since upgraded, but i've long since
    had enough of MSN messenger.
