I'm a bit of a numpty wrt music and stuff and need to be able to re-sample
(I think that's what it's called) MP3 music files so that the quality is
dropped a little but file size reduced significantly ... my son just got a
Samsung D600 mobile phone and I a D500, both of which act as MP3 players but
neither of which has much memory capacity.

It would be much appreciated if anyone could point me in the direction of a
foc editor/re-sampler that is extremely easy to use? I've googled and found
a couple but I'd like opinions from people I know [1] and who actually use
    the software.

[1] For a very loose meaning of the word 'know'.

GSMArena's website states that the D600 and D500 both support the AAC
format. I would suggest you use a program such as GoldWave (or
anything really) or WinAmp[1] to decode the MP3 to an uncompressed
..wav then re-encode it with an AAC encoder at a much smaller bitrate
without too much of a drop in quality. While MP3s is a good standard,
the format is about twenty years old and in twenty years technology
has moved on somewhat. For a small mobile device that only supports a
couple of formats I would suggest using AAC.

[1] To decompress music in WinAmp make a playlist of all of the files
you want unsquashing (Press the PL button just below the 'stereo'
light and drag the files into the box) and then go to Preferences on
the main winamp window (press the O button) scroll down to Plug-ins
and then Output then change it from DirectSound or whatever to
"Nullsoft Disk Writer plug-in" and configure it so you know where it's
going to spew out the files. You may then close the preferences
window *make sure that repeat is off* and press the play button. It'll
spend a minute or two 'playing' the files into the Disk Writer plugin
and stop at the end, now go back into the preferences and change the
plugins/output back to DirectSound or whatever it was on before, which
    you will forget to do.

    MP3 to Ringtone Gold (shareware)

Can also cut the best/favorite bits from music tracks for shorter ringtones.

    Audiograbber. Excellent piece of software.
    http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/

Make sure you also download the Lame encoder(you just need to put the few
    files into the Audiograbber directory)
It samples the free CDDB(online database) the inserts the Album/Artist/track
names, and within those, is configureable.
I have tried several and find this to be good. And simple. Like me. Well,
    certainly the simple bit.
