Still £400. Given that I pretty much trash any phone I have, the residual
value of the thing after I've done with it will be pretty low...

Then get the Java email client for Blackberrys; LogicMail.

Supports POP3 and IMAP and doesn't go though Blackberrys servers.

Not as fast or as fancy as the iPhone email client but it does the job.

Apparently proxies are doable if you want to meddle with config files in a
database somewhere. Hopefully it will be fixed with a firmware update - ours
is assigned by DCHP or something like that.
Can you do this via 3G or is it through wifi only? This could be useful for
when I've got some time to kill, but not if it needs wifi and can't use a
    proxy!
Unfortunately, I am already with Orange. Which means that if I want one of
their deals via mobiles.co.uk, I'll have to give up my number. I think I'll
ring them and have a haggle on the phone...

I could almost be tempted to finally come off my Vodafone Leisure 500
tariff for one of those. Not sure I want what might be such a fragile
phone though. The lad is disconsolate that his new LG fancy thing has a
fubar screen after just one small drop from a pocket on to a hard
surface[1]. His cast of Samsung slide up job which I am now using has
been kicked around (unintentionally) and survived. My old T68i survived
a full cycle in a washing machine.

[1] A visit to the Orange shop, armed with suitable phrases learned from
my TSO colleagues on site, is imminent.

Mine has survived it's first drop, corner first, onto a hard surface. D'oh!

Can't get mine to work :(

I got a similar deal direct from Orange, with free upgrade. (They
initially wanted a fifteen quid fee - hah!)
    Careful!!

When you dropped it, did you simply say "oh, **** it" or did you clasp
your hands together in front of you in a dramatic way and exclaim "My
    Hero!"?

Yes yes, but what about the flags? Did you scratch those? Actually you
can't have done, I would've heard the shouting.

Useful reference material to fire at Orange & LG should the need arise.
I don't expect a phone to put up with the full Bobby Vee[1] treatment,
but this GW3000 hardly seems robust.

[1] The old gimmers might get this pop reference.

The good thing about the google applications is that the majority are
free and there really is an app for just about anything you want.

I'm in a minority but I think the G1 is a pretty good phone even
though it gives the impression that it'd fall apart in a decent gust
    of wind.

My home wifi is thoroughly proxy free. However my University's wifi is not,
and that's where I'd probably be doing most of my wifi-ing. However, 3G is
hopefully tolerable for bits and bobs - it currently is with opera mini.

Heaps of phones have this feature in one form or another:-

    <googles>

    Sony Ericsson T616
Nokia 2300, 3585i, 6310, 8310 and shed loads of newer models.
    Moto MPX220

    Interesting patent:-

Best asking on the mobile newsgroup really. I recall reading this on one of
the phone manuals I've had, can't remember which one it was now.
