FOAK - mobile phone choice

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Aug 6, 2006.

  1. I've had my antique Nokia for.... oh, I dunno, four or five years. Maybe
six. Apparently I can get a free upgrade, which sounds cool.

Ideally, I'd like something which gives web/email access as well. Being
able to access newsgroups would be even funkier.

Recommendations? Assuming that the really spiffy phones need a payment
as well (ie: aren't entirely free), I'd happily cough some extra dosh.

Current phone is on contract with T-Mobile and doesn't get used much.

My Nokia N70 does all of the above and is very usable.

I think you need to get the hang of using numbers first, then move
onto text messages before you even consider web access.

People of your age need time to adapt to new technology.

If you fancy a change of lifestyle (I'm taking the plunge in the next
couple of weeks) then swap over to BT Total Broadband Option 3:
includes 8Mb DSL, 40Gb monthly use limit, 250 minutes of BT OpenZone
time (ie. WiFi in service stations, etc), BT Broadband Talk (VOIP via
a proper phone), Wireless BT Home Hub and a DECT BT Home Hub Phone and
then slap BT Fusion on the top. BT Fusion is an ever-so-slightly
modified Motorola RAZR 3-series phone that works as a normal mobile,
but when you're at home (or within 25 metres of the Home Hub) it
'roams' on to the BT Broadband Talk service and routes the mobile
calls via VOIP so your mobile will work as normal, but your 'mobile'
calls at home will be charged at the standard BT landline rate as they
    go through the HomeHub.

If you do it before I do then you can tell me when it all goes wrong.
    Ta.

Sounds like you want an iMate K-Jam. T-Mobile badge it as a 'T-Mobile
MDA Vario'. If you want data access, then stick with T-mobile and add
'Web n Walk' to your contract otherwise your data costs will be very
    expensive.

You'll get web and email on it, however, I've yet to find a sensible
    mobile solution for reading usenet.

Laptop and 3G phone on T-Mobile 'Web n Walk' would be a relatively
    inexpensive and useful solution.

Satphone? You mean a Satellite Phone? What on earth for? Unless you're
made of money and want to throw it away.

So what do you think of the Demon VOIP phone service - £10 national £17
    international per month?

And can I remotely connect up to the work network so I can use it from
    home ?
