As my contract has reached the 12 months stage T-Mobile seem keen to tempt
me to stay on another year by waving shiny new phones under my nose.

    The shortlist is:
    Sony Erricson K700i
    Samsung D500

    Which would you choose?

I just got a K700i from them, it's everything the T610 should have been
    and more.

I'd push for a Nokia 6600 if I were you.

  4. I've got a K700i. Lots of extra features (toys) like MP3 player
(enough memory for about 8 tracks) bluetooth, camera, sound recorder,
FM radio etc. The battery life is slightly longer than a mayfly's,
although once you get bored of the extras and just use it as a phone
it is better. Generally reliable, not bad in poor signal conditions.

Upgrade the software to improve the battery life. Either via the Sony
Ericsson site or by going to http://www.totalserver.net/ if your
service provider blocks online upgrades through SE. This is a paying
site, but works really well (about £8 to upgrade the firmware, IIRC).

You'll either need the docking station (DSS-25) for the Sony Ericsson
upgrade or the T28 data cable, if it's the totalserver site that you
    use.

Or go along to your local Sony Ericsson service center and get it done
    for free.

    I got a k700

As a phone I find it very good. BT hammers the battery life, so I'm gonna
get the software upgraded. It reboots pretty often, but I geuss that's
just mine and I've not got round to getting it swapped.

IMO though the phone book sucks. It answers itself as I try to dig it out
of pockets, seems the key lock is not locking all the keys. It tries to
send text messages on it;s own as well.

Finally they changed the key locking procedure to the reverse of what it
was. I assume to piss me off.

Having moaned about it, I forgive it's errors simply cos it is very good at
    making phone calls.
