I've got a terabyte of NAS sitting here, specifically for backing
    machines up to.

No, it doesn't. Not reliably anyway which is kinda necessary when
    we're talking about backups.

Can't you use SyncToy on XP then, or can XP not see/read the files?

That's odd. I ran it on a machine here and it performs exactly the same
as XP. The machine isn't hugely fast either, it's just a several year
old althlon 2800XP, with 2GB of Ram - hardly leading edge kit.

Backing up the XP VM isn't a problem. Just copy the file.

It's the backup of everything else on the Mac side of things that is
    the problem.

Although, DataBackup 3 has just finished it's run and has perfectly
backed up 80Gb to the NAS so given that's only 30 quid and can be
scheduled (it'll even start the machine from off to do a backup), I
    think I'll buy that.

..mac uses webdav. so if you can run a dav service on your nas you should be
able to add a hosts entry for whatever the idisk server apple backup uses is,
and point it at that. the next main hurdle would then be authentication.

  10. Indeed. Everyone knows that slrn is far, far better.

Quite. I seem to recall, the last time this was discussed, learning that
you needed some sort of 'plugin' for slrn to do lots of things that tin
does out of the box. I've been using it on and off for six or seven years
now (with the occasional tinkering with MacSoup, MT-Newswatcher, slrn,
Entourage &c.), and it hasn't crashed once.

Only fly in the ointment is that as my NNTP server is on localhost, loading
UKRM takes _ages_, and sometimes hangs the machine for up to sixty seconds
at a time. UKRM currently has 131,846 posts, taking up 575 MB and spread
over 5,968 threads. Loading that lot takes a minute or two.

Of course it is, you nob.

You might also want to read what *you* originally replied *to* and what
you said that made you look incredibly stupid. Here it is, just to
    remind you:

Ben said:- Time Machine. Doesn't support network shares. Even when hacked.

You said: no, it won't. time machine relies on a filesystem with hardlinks.

You were wrong. Time Machine *will* support network shares, when hacked.

Won't for you, and at least one other person I know, granted. Mine is
working just fine. I do suppose you've updated to the latest OS
    versions etc etc.

I've got 10.5.2 and it tells me it's patched up to date.

I've found a few niggly little bugs like that so far. One annoyance
is the 'hide' option you have when loading apps on startup. It
doesn't for all apps, particularly Mail and Finder which opens a
window because I have it set to reconnect to a network share on
    startup.

So much for 'it just works'.

Yep, got exactly that issue myself. There are also issues with
multiscreen setups and spaces. Windows just disappear sometimes.
    Just works, mostly? ;)

  18. It doesn't for me either :-(

Tried both two SMB shares (one on Windows and one on Samba/linux) and a
(Mac-formatted) USB drive attached to the airport box.

Started doing the backup then quits saying that the backup can't be
    written.
    Yes.
