FOAK Logitec vs Linux

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by steve auvache, Oct 19, 2006.

  1. I am no expert in these matters but istr more than a few threads about
these two and compatibility issues and it just so happens that I know a
bloke[1] who is having problems making his web cam work under the latest
    Mandrake.

A couple of pointers please, to likely web sites from those what know,
if you would be so good.

[1] An active conspiracy theorist type whose 'puter did things it
shouldn't have when I know he wasn't in the house and I see this as a
perfect opportunity to allow his paranoia to feed a little and wish to
encourage him. This you may consider cruel I understand but I am
getting quite an education out of it so it is A Good Thing.

  2. The finest example of this that I know of came from someone of my
acquaintance who managed to persuade a particular Nigerian scammer,
whose computer he utterly owned, that he'd planted a webcam utility in
    it.

Said webcam, scammer was told, would use any letter 'O' on the screen as
    its aperture.

Scambaiter watched, delighted, as scammer desperately tried clearing any
document or webpage that had an 'O' in it off his screen.

  5. Logitech do _not_ support Linux. I made the mistake of asking the
boss to buy me a £60 Logitech camera to find that it didn't work with
Linux. Worse, the way Scientific Linux works with external drivers seems
to preclude using any third-party drivers (something about "no module
support"). There was someone developing drivers for older Logitech
cameras who had a parting with the "free software" purists because some of
his stuff was developed under a non-disclosure agreement with Philips and
therefore "polluted the kernel" -- in any event I couldn't get his stuff
to work usably with an older camera either, being unable to get any
    resolution higher than (IIRC) 319x219.

If you want him to waste a week or two, tell him that it does work...
