I have an Acer Aspire 9300 laptop with a couple of family movies on
it. I'd like to watch these on the big TV in the living room.

    Which cable do I need?

    TIA

That would rather depend on what inputs your TV can handle......

Burning to DVD is probably a better option.

    Buy a less pikey TV.

Mine's got a VGA socket, which is the easiest option of the lot.

Probably one of those S-VHS cables that look like a smaller DIN lead, most
recent TV's have a suitable input, generally used for a camcorder.
That's what I do with my Dell D600

Your laptop seems to have a VGA and S-Video outputs so you decide which one
you pick and wheer you want to plug it in.

Assuming the coloured inputs on your TV are component, I suppose this would
    suit you:

I'm not sure how the f*ck I managed to press Alt+S when I wanted to press
Ctrl+V but anyhow.... as I was saying:

    <http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/BTXL18015-Component-VGA-Cable.html>

The easiest to find cable set around here was this:
    <http://www.amazon.co.uk/Video-SCART-cable-Phono-Leads/dp/B000Q8L63Q/ref=pd_sbs_ce_title_2>

It uses the S-video output; I have one of those and it's not too shabby,
although I think vga-out offers better quality.

There's also some diy vga-to-scart tutorials around but I didn't bother
    looking.

    CableS probably.

If yer big tv has a 'PC' connector then a 15pin SubD Male to Male (VGA
lead)[1] for the video plus a 3.5mm stereo jack to (probably) twin
phono connectors (for the audio) should do it.

Maplins, PC World, eBay .. decent high street electrical / HiFi shop
    etc.

    All the best ..

[1] These can be quite expensive (~20 quid) from the wrong places and
99p from eBay (I'm not sure if 'quality' comes into it for this
    application).

I bought one of these from Maplin in Harlow.

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=35910&doy=29m12

Despite my weapons grade numptyness I've managed to get an output to
the TV[1] but only in black and white :(

    Any pointers?

    [1] more luck than judgement.

Sounds like you've picked a SCART socket without S-Video on it - so
you're getting the B&W composite picture.

    Try a different SCART socket.

  17. Sure as shit does. You can get away with a cheapy, but it's the cheapies
that cause the most problems (ghosting, etc). Of course, not all the
pricier ones are as good as their price suggests.

Check the setup for the AVI inputs, most likely the one you have choosen is
    in the wrong mode.
    Change sockets or modes.
