Well, that's our whole life (including bike) packed into a 20' ISO, and
making it's way to Montreal for its trip on the high seas, so it's time
to consider the trip home and the end destination.

The trip home is via a 4 week detour in California, starting in San
Francisco and ending in Los Angeles. San Francisco is pretty much
sorted and we're staying in Japan town for a few days but Los Angeles
is proving to be a bit more problematic. There's just too much choice.

Any recommendations for where to stay in or around LA and what must we
see, bearing in mind that the kids are 3 and 8?

It's 99% certain that the next job will be in Corsham (with regular
sidetrips to Henlow, so hopefully scope for a few beers with the
Bedfordshire contingent), which seems pleasant enough. Expect a torrent
of posts asking about various places around Corsham for both living and
riding but, in the meantime, I'm looking for pointers to information
that would be worthwhile for those looking to move in a south-westerly
    direction.

Finally, as a bit of a BTW, did you know that, under Scots law, my
upstairs neighbour is not liable for destroying two of my bedrooms
because "she tightened the connectors with a spanner and therefore
could not reasonably be seen as being negligent when it subsequently
    leaked". DirectLine cnuts!

*Waves* (from just over the Herts border). I'm a couple of miles from
Henlow. Give me a shout when you're in this neck of the woods.
Be fair. Under Scots law "Ah weeeell, she was a bit pished, y'knaw?"
would probably be a valid defence.

Don't stay at Holiday Inn, Anaheim. It wasn't bad, it's just that we
were there for three nights, and I can't recall the hotel *at all*.

    Go South, young man.

San Diego's your feller. Lovely town. Seaworld and the Wild Animal Park
for the sprogs, the new aircraft carrier museum for the dad, shopping
for the mum[1], the Gas Lamp district for entertainment, and the fish
    restaurant-whose-name-escapes-me-but-it's-in-Seaport-Village for the
scoff of your collective lives (go downstairs, it's the same food, but
    half the price).

And you can always take a side-trip to "The Happiest Place On Earth":
Tijuana. (Don't worry, you can always sell one of the kids if you've
    blown the budget).

[1] Sexist? Me? Bless your heart, little lady. No.

  6. my mums neighbour destroyed the whole of her flat by having a leaking
pipe and going on holiday. took *every* ceiling down. she was away too
and the person who popped in to feed her cats opened the door found
the whole lot on the floor under a foot of water.

not sure how he got out of it but his insurance didn't pay a penny
    either.

  7. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "higgins@work"
IANASL, but that sounds like utter mince.

    Grimly Curmudgeon sed...

I would have thought so, and I'm just waiting for my solicitor's advice
on it before I respond to DL, but the message appears to be that they
took every care to ensure it was tight and if it did leak later then
tough tittie. I'm more hacked off that it took 3 weeks between being
told that there was a problem and her[1] actually finding and
rectifying the leaky washer. I suspect that, if DL's comments are
legally correct, then my argument will be that she was negligent in
taking so long to identify the source and, therefore, made a minor
problem into a bit of a disaster area.

[1] The builder doing the investigation eventually had to request
access to find the source of the water pissing through her floorboards.
He said he could actually hear the leak[2].
[2] It was the mains pressure inlet connection.

Corsham is pretty nice in a picturesque way but it has 2 main redeeming
features: *The* best live music pub for miles and superb roads all around
    it.
    http://www.twopigs.freeserve.co.uk/index.htm
The downside is the cost of houses there: Pretty damn high. I live about 10
miles east of there near Melksham which is a fair bit cheaper and has more
    facilities.
If you're interested in moving to this area, I can get links for you.
    cheers,

We'll definitely be moving in that general direction, it's just a
    question of the exact location.

    cheers,
