  1. # Isn't it great to have skin
    # It keeps the outside out and your insides in
    # It's washable and durable and even pretty cureable
    # It's wonderful stuff and we all get enough

Never heard of this mode of application. Ask your local pharmacist, I
    guess.
Try putting a light dressing over the treated are to stop it rubbing
    off.
Bugger. Rules out most other drugs in its class too, but again, ask
your pharmacist, as some of the other more specific (i.e. needing a
lower dose for the same effect, hence causing less irritation)
products may also be available OTC now. Voltarol/en, for example. But
really, as I mention elsewhere, topical application is generally
    viewed as much more effective.
Not surprising, as it has almost zero anti-inflammatory properties. It
works as an analgesic by blocking the reception of pain signals,
whereas aspirin/ibuprofen et al. work at the pain site to reduce the
    source of the pain.
Indeed. In fact it's more of an irritant than ibuprofen and is
generally less effective against joint pain.
You might also consider suppositories, but they're not popular in the
UK so may be difficult to find. Again, talk to your pharmacist and/or
    doctor.

But really you will probab ly get much better results with the gel if
you can find a way to make it work.

Dunno about 'doubts'. Clearly they need to test how effetive various
routes of application are, but I'm happy to see the study demonstrates
my[1] point on this one anyway:

"CONCLUSION: Topical applications of ketoprofen allow the attainment
of high intra-articular tissue concentrations. "

[1] Perhaps I should point out that on this subject, I'm virtually
    quoting my wife, the pharmacologist.

I'd be very wary IIWY. Certainly, as I'm sure you will, you should
cease and desist from anything that even vaguely aggrevates the pain.
It is possible to make things worse, and even if you don't you're
likely to induce more swelling, which is not a good thing as it
destabilises the area and slows down the natural healing process.
    Heh.

I've suffered from chondromalacia patella since I was 16. You don't
have to be old for it to strike!

It was first operated on when I was 19.

The surgeon (who just happened to be the Queen's Orthopaedic Surgeon
of the moment) decided to completely remove the kneecap and move a few
other bits around. He also had some strange ideas about exercise, all
of which have since been proved to have been Extremely Bad Ideas.

I reckon H M The Queen is bloody lucky she never needed his services.

Thanks to his experimenting I've been told that I cannot have a knee
joint replacement, and the only possible surgical option remaining is
to fuse the joint at a convenient angle. This option I'm trying to put
off until the last possible moment, so if you see me sitting down when
most are standing, that'll be why.

The CP also appeared in the other kneecap, which was dealt with more
effectively by a different surgeon, and I still have half a patella on
    that side.

Gertrude's riding position is the best for me of any bike I've owned
or seen, with the thigh horizontal, the calf vertical, and the foot
horizontal. An ideal lowest-stress configuration for the knee joint.

However, the sideways problem experienced by Cane does not sound to me
like chondromalacia. I hope he heals well and quickly.
