Over the last week I've developed a pain in my left knee. I can only
imagine it's through karate or the gym but I spose it could've been
caused by many things as I don't remember a specific event prior to the
    pain.

It seems to be getting worse and is currently covered in Voltarol Gel
and supported in a tube sock. Moving my leg in a natural forward back
motion is no problem but the slightest movement to the side and I'm in
    trouble.

    Any thoughts?

    Cane says...
Have you dislocated the kneecap at any time?

I used to do this with monotonous regularity with my right kneecap, but
for some reason it stopped dislocating about 10 years ago. I used to get
similar symptoms to yours after a dislocation.

Hmmm I'm beginning to wonder. I'd ask my Dad but he's out. I fucking
hope it isn't but I've a horrible feeling it might be.
No. You're a big, **** off solar flare!

Also a classic 'kicking' injury suffered by footballers, rugby players,
cricketers and people involed in martial arts. One foot stays planted
while the rest of the body moves. Just spoken to my Dad who has
confirmed possible Cruciate ligament damage and given me a series of
exercices and treatments I can do at home.
Weird. I had a skiing dream last night despite not having been in over
    10 years.

Very unlikely that you could damage one without noticing[1], plus the
symptoms are all wrong - the acl/pcl only come into play to aid
stability if the knee is bent beyond its normal parameters.

[1] i.e. twisting the knee _way_ out of line and suffering lots of
    pain in so doing.

This could still happen in karate. Any other ideas?
Karate would be the most likely culprit but you're right, I don't
    remember a specific moment.

Sounds like cartilage damage. I damaged both of mine playing cricket,
I think. I say "I think" because, like you, there's often no
noticeable moment when the damage occurs. In both cases I'd
overstrained my legs a bit, running hard for balls when not at full
fitness, and only noticed something was wrong a week or so later when
the knee was still swollen and getting worse.

The good news is that it's normally a day-surgery job to get an
arthroscopy which will be able to shave off the damaged areas, with a
full recovery usually within just a few days. It's unlikely to be
_major_ damage unless you can feel some sort of clicking as it moves.

In any case, get thee to your doctir sharpish - there are better
anti-inflammatories for knees even if it's not any permanent damage.

    You run don't you?

In which case, get yourself to a doc and get a referral to someone who
knows what they're talking about sharpish. Knee injuries only get
    worse if incorrectly diagnosed.

That was just for charity. My main thing is karate with regular weight
    training in between.
Well I may do just that to get referred on but my Dad is an
international athletics coach so he's usually a pretty safe bet when it
comes to this sort of stuff.

Does gel work for anything deeper than skin deep? My theory is that
there is no direct route from skin to joint - the drug goes into the blood and
lymph, then circulates around the body, including the affected part.
Better to take it orally, which gets it into the blood quicker.
Any thoughts? I could be wrong.

    4ax.com:

I had a minor knee op to treat similar pain and occasional locking up of my
right knee. Keyhole job, general anaesthetic, in and out the same day.

Only had to wait three years too.

OTOH, I had a medial meniscus job done a couple of years ago now. No
swelling at all, no real pain unless I moved my knee wrong but a scan
showed it was almost torn in half and the subsequent "keyhole" surgery
turned out to be 2 small incisions each side of the knee and a 2 inch
cut across to get the bits out :-/

Full recovery wasn't a few days. I was using crutches for a couple of
days and left it about a month before going back to work (I have a
fairly active job, I don't sit around, I also need to kneel quite a
    bit).
