FOAK Joining Avi and Wmv files ?

We have a few avi and wmv files [1] we'd like to join to make continuous
stream that we'll eventually make into a video, but not sure how to do it
other than using a video editor and importing the 'bits' one by one, and
then making them into one video. It gets a bit tedious when the first 'bit'
which might be 500m long needs the next bit adding which might only be 20m
long. We'd like to have a (preferably freebie or ver' cheap) software that
could take a folder full of maybe 50 or 60 files and simply turn them into a
single file. Most will be avi's, some will be wmv's, but we'll only be
joining avi to avi, not avi to wmv or vice-versa. Most similarly named and
with consecutive numbers, ie file001.avi, video0001.wmv.

    Any suggestions, please.

[1] Not for publication or professional use, just films taken by the kids on
their respective digital cameras, which we want to keep more permanently.
Mostly BMX bike riding, jumping, tricks etc.

Clearly not a professional tool, Windows Movie Maker, which I believe
is a standard part of MS Office (or XP?) allows you do do pretty much
exactly what you want. You need to drag & Drop each clip onto a
storyboard, but once it's all there you can edit bits out, repeat
    sections or insert extra effects.

Veggie and others will be alng shortly to point you in the direction
of more professional tools, I'm sure.

VirtualDub lets you open a file then 'Append AVI Segments' but I don't
think it'll work with WMVs. I have done similar with AVIs in the past
just using the dos copy command with the +b switch, which is probably
the quickest way of doing it. No idea if that would work with WMVs
    though.

Bad form - I meant /b. So for example:

    copy /b file001.avi + file002.avi + file003.avi merged.avi

If you use notepad to create the command so you can cut & paste like
crazy it shouldn't take long. I'd suggest trying it with just a few
files first though in case it doesn't work with the format the cameras
    spat out.

For what he wants, just drag and dropping everything in Windows Movie
Maker sounds the only solution to me.

I dunno - but the suffixes Paul quoted above look just like split
    files.

Haven't got a folder of files yet, but will try it after this weekend.
Certainly when the downloaded app. is expanded and the 'read me' perused it
would seem to be able to join almost any files which have a progression, so
    it looks a winner.

    Appreciate the suggestion, thanks. ;)

Had a litle play with the apps ... unfortunately they don't work.

The 'joiner' part only joins parts that have been split by the 'splitter'
part, and have exactly the same filename, with the 'oo1 ...oo2 etc' added.

Thus video001.avi, video002.avi, video003.avi are all seen as separate parts
.... So I tried renaming the parts (irfanview, a great bit of software) to
video.avi.001, video.avi.002 etc but the program saw through this and still
    refused to play ball.

No worries, nice try but no biscuit, thanks for the effort though.

You da man ... Combi-Join works brilliantly for what we want.

Many, many thanks. This'll save a shit-load of time 'playing'.

Er, you've spent days fucking around looking for free software when you
