FOAK: I've lost my HTM/HTML file icons!

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Richard Sterry, Jul 19, 2004.

  1. Following installation of Office 2003 Pro, which may or may not be a
coincidence, I have noticed that the file icons for .HIM and .HTML files
have reverted to a default file icon, instead of the usual "a" Explorer file
icon. How the heck do I restore them?

I've looked in the Control Panel Folder Options, and tried to Change Icon
for that file, but I cannot find the right icon in Shell.dell, and even if I
pick one that is available it is not applied on the desktop even though it
shows in the folder options ok, even after a reboot.

Looking on my laptop, which is displaying the icons ok, when I try the same
Change Icon business I still cannot see the right icon in Shell.dell which
    is odd.

Should I be looking in another file. It ain't serious, but it's
    disconcerting!

  5. Please read original posting PROPERLY. ;-)

I dunno why I referred to the shell.dell file when I meant shell.dll - must
    have Dells on the brain.

This may not be the 'approved' method, however it is quite safe and I
*think* it will restore the icons.

    Open windows explorer
    Select Tools -> Folder Options
    Select the File Types tab
Locate the file type and press 'Delete' - repeat for HTM & HTML
    Close windows explorer

Locate a .HTM file on your computer using explorer (or from desktop)
    Double click on it
(windows will say that it doesn't know which program to open the file
    with)
Select the program you want to use
Repeat for all other required file types.

  7. The principle seems sound, but alas it still does not restore the icon. Very
    strange indeed.

Thanks for the suggestion though - worth a bash.

Download and install tweakui (widely available freeware utility). Then use
its repair facility to 'rebuild icons'. This should sort out the problem -
and tweakui has many other useful features as well.

  10. Yes, that's the one - missed off the 32, sorry.

  11. Alas, the icon repair function has still made no difference - very odd.

Thanks for the suggestion though - I'm sure I'll find TweakUI handy for
    other things.

That *really* should have worked. Did they not change at all?

    Not ususally, no

When you delete the original settings, did the icons change then?
Do you have entries for HTM and HTML etc in File types tab?
Is this XP? I'm thinking system restore may well be causing an issue here.
