FOAK: Interesting places to head for, in the US

I did it at the end of a circuit round northern California: north from
San Francisco to Eureka, then inland, up to Crater Lake, then south again
taking in Lassen Volcanic Park, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Giant Redwoods and
finally across to San Luis Obispo and back up to San Francisco.

I think that the Highway 1 north of SF is better than the south, but it's
a bit prone to fog and is generally cooler, and the view travelling along
the coast is fantastic either way.

I suppose one could argue that travelling south is better because you're
    fractionally closer to the sea.

I like the north very much - my cousin used to study in Arcata so I got to
hang out in that area a couple of times. But it's rather wet up there...

Highway 1 North is a good bit of road. Plenty fun.
And one is heading for Monterey and Salinas, which are excellent.

Couple of days in Las Vegas, then head out to the canyon, or to Four Corners

The 299 doesn't go through Susanville: it passes quite some way to the

I've riden on the Western part of 299 and that's pretty good. Near
Susanville, it'd be highway 44 or 36 that you're thinking of, I guess.

Possibly Highway 139, which runs from 299 to Susanville, past Bear Lake.
The junction with the 299 is only a few miles from Lookout.

Coming from Reno, you'd probably take US Highway 395 to Susanville, then
the 139 north to Lookout. (Might be a bit dodgy in the winter.) The 299
really runs SW/NE, near Lookout but nowhere near Reno.

Actually, it's Eagle Lake. Which is a shame, really.
I've got a PDF map of California off the California tourist site. It's
quite good. I've also got a couple of maps I bought when I was over
    there.
I stayed at Klamath Falls on the way back from Crater Lake: a fly infested
dump. The motel cunningly put outside lights directly over the doors so
as soon as you opened it the room filled with these tiny little flies
which you had no chance of getting rid of.

Fortunately, turning the air conditioning up full blast whilst I went out
for a beer took care of most of them.
