I need a holiday, and given the weak dollar, I quite fancy doing bits of the
    USA.

So... any recommendations gratefully received; I'm not so fussed about the
main touristy bits, just want to go somewhere 'nice', as it were, without
    breaking the bank.

    TIA

You really have you be a bit more specific. What constitutes "nice"?

  4. I have an Auntie in Greensborough, North Carolina if you want somewhere
    to stay.

Last time I spoke to her she said something about 3 of friends'
daughters that wanted to take me out next time I went over :)

Erm, well I went to Australia last year, mainly Sydney - all the things like
Bondi Beach, and the main touristy stuff in the actual city were 'ok'.

It was when I went out to some of the national parks, I really enjoyed it
(FWIW, if anyone is planning to go there in thne near future, the Blue
Mountains, a bit NW of Sydney, is awesome).

I still want to do some of the more touristy things, (never been there
either before, so rude not to really), but what I'd really like to see, is
the 'real' rural America... and no, I don't mean the bits where common
attire is a white sheet and pointy hat.

I reckon if I do this, instead of the other option, which is piss off round
Europe in the car, I'm looking to spend two weeks out there, so a 30%
'getting your pics taken by the sights', 70% 'real America' split, is the
    aim.

The main aim overall, is to 'get away from it all, and unwind', whilst
expanding my narrow mind that little bit more.

Isn't "take out" American slang for "kill"?

Sounds like the ideal time for a road trip through the middle. Woming,
    Montana, etc.

If by that, you mean towns spreadout, with desolation with a sprinkling of
interesting natural scenery in between, that's exactly what I fancy doing.
    :)

I'm a City Boy, so I like New York. You'll never want for something
    to do.
    NY isn't cheap, though.

By myself by looks of it... as soon as the car I've got up for sale goes,
which should be later this week, all being well...

The temptation to go buy a Pan European is great, too.

  18. Soon then? Shit, I've got a couple of grand kicking about but I'd be a
fool to spend it on a holiday right now.

    Arse.
When you're out there? How long were you thinking of going?

    *shrug*

I've had a gutful of one thing and another lately, and have come to the
conclusion I need a break from it all.
Indeed... s'alright if you know where your next £2k is coming from, but not
if that's the be all and end all for the foreseeable...
No, here... especially if I decided on plan B instead, and piss off on a
    tour round Europe.
If the US, depends on how much exactly I raise, but two weeks minimum.

Longer, if I can afford it... which brings me to my next point - is it like
Australia, as in you need to apply for your visa in advance, and if so, can
    I do it online etc.

Apologies if these all seem like dumb 'tard questions... by my own
admission, I'm not that well practiced in these things!
