My new PC has just arrived. I need to get an old IDE hard drive running in
it so that I don't have to transfer a load of shite off the disk, and I need
to make my LJ5 work with it despite a distinct lack of parallel ports.
    Possible?

I think I've got a LJ5 10/100 Ethernet internal module somewhere, if you get
really stuck I'll have a hunt about for it - it's no use to me after my LJ5
self-destructed (so would cost the price of a jiffy bag's postage or UR from
near Camberley) , but you could hang it off your home 'net and make it
    available to all & sundry.

Not a bad idea. Would it be possible to link it up to a single PC via x-over
cable for the time being? It's not a brilliant solution to the problem but
would probably a) work better than the average USB to parallel SEAsian bodge
and b) be considerably cheaper. I think I paid £20 for the entire printer...

I'd prefer a proper internal setup, ie, PATA to SATA, allowing me to keep
the disk in there. It's an extra 80 gigs of storage and I don't have to faff
    moving files.

I have an HP ethernet>parallel server (HP JetDirect>) somewhere which
you can have for the cost of postage. It used to run (ta-da) an LJ5! And
yes, it would work with a crossover cable.

PS I could bring it to the EOSM, if that's any help?

Crikey, that's dear for what it is. Might just end up using this machine as
a network bitbucket thing and buy more storage for the Dell as and when -
I've got 160 gigs over 2 old IDE disks but that's £20, which isn't much less
than what a 160 gig disk costs now.

YHM. Do you know anyone coming to the EOSM? I could give it to them and
    save any money changing hands!

  12. Is there no built-in IDE? I've not come across a SATA motherboard
    yet w/o IDE, I don't think, but it's been a small sample...

It's a dell. I get a whole TWO, yes, TWO, PCI slots. Which is fucking
astonishing really. Wireless card and Turtlebeach = no more expansion. Which
means I'm a bit fucked if I do what I did to my last mobo and rip the USB
    headers off by accident...

Should have specced a decent mobo, then. OTOH, a decent (for that,
read just about any current) mobo would give you built-in wi-fi and
7-channel sound without having to use a slot.

Maybe I should, but I'm a tight arse. This computer was bloody cheap, and it
does come with 7 channel sound, but I like my turtlebeach. Wifi was a £50
option or something, which is ridiculous...
