Although if I *really* had my choice it would be one of those *huge* yank
    fridges with automatic ice maker

I thought you could get them that make in advance and store internaly? Like
a pro ice maker. If not, then I'd have to get one of the pro jobs :)

How does that work? The freezer is on anyway and water is paid for
    pretty much.

2 minutes in the microwave seems to do the trick.

    Time, most likely.

Costs a quid for a big bag of ice, but costs you time in filling trays
and tipping them out. Or something like that.

Never heard of the conservation of energy? It will require more electricity
to freeze the water, or the temperature of the freezer will rise.

Yeah. A family member has one which is utterly superb. Makes plenty.
Enough to keep enough champagne on ice for 30 people at a BBQ in
    summer.
    That's a sign of... something.

Dunno, but what I do know is the other day I took the tray out, and they
were all sticking like mad, like I was trying to evict them from home or
something. Anyway, I got distracted by the phone, came back a minute
later and they slipped out like a slippery something.

So maybe at cold temps the ice is just sticking to the tray, and after a
little melting around the edges they have a thin sliver of water to work
    with. Or something.

Well, some people are taking the piss somewhat, but that's pretty usual.

As ever, the non-plumbed in ones are cheaper. There's 23 Contessa units that
make 12 cubes in 15 mins, or 1Kg in 2.5 hours going for a fixed price of
    £179.99.

There's one currently at £102 that makes 2Kg in 3 hours.

There's a used "Ice Mountain" commercial unit going for £235, that does 40
    kilos in 24 hours.

So, basically you should be able to score a kitchen-top type unit for
between £100-£150. Probably a lot less if you wait until the hot weather is
    over!
