... if I had a perfectly watchable avi movie[1] on my laptop and wanted
to burn a disk for a colleague to enjoy, what would be the best way to
do this?

[1] Terry & June - Series 1. The one where Jason Bourne fucking kills
everyone!

Depends what the colleague has to watch it on:
- laptop/desktop
- DiVX capable player
- DVD player

and what format the "AVI" file is:
- XViD
- DiVX
- any other numerable formats that can be within an AVI container - suggest
you check with GSpot
No "Terry & June" is not perfectly watchable - it was crap at the time and
worse now.

My love for you is so strong it has learned to overlook the fact that
you are a real life character from Lord Of The Rings :)

The combination of my laptop and Google groups has caused your arrow
to appear to point at the word 'the' as would be used in the sentence
'THE girls in my class are hot'.

I have forwarded this damning evidence to the Vichy Government or
which ever authority currently runs France.

Consider yourself exposed and denounced as a nonce!

Does that do a better job of things than Nero, which seems to let the
sound and vision get out of sync.
NFI - not a clue, I'm afraid. It works very well with little
overhead, is a piece of piss to use and costs nothing. I'll forgive
it quite a lot, TBF.

But you've burned a DVD from an avi and the sound's stayed in synch,
yes?
When the sound was in synch in the first place, yes.

14. That's useful.
Nero8 DVD from avi lets the sound drift - fixable, but a faff.

As for the other way round...
I found SUPER did a stonking job of producing a very good quality AVI,
but the sound had drifted out of sync also.

15. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Grimly Curmudgeon
It must be awful when the groan doesn't coincide exactly with the first
spurt. Unwatchable.

It does indeed , though v8.0 doesn't work reliably on Vista and stops
converting mid way through
