You're old anyway. Your hearing will be fucked so I don't see why you
don't buy something cheap and cheerful.

gold interconnects, 'oxygen free copper cable' etc. etc. etc.

It's all marketing hype designed to separate the gullible from their
    money.

One assumes that if one is truly anal about quality then a jolly decent
set of headphones would be the business anyway and **** all this
    depleted uranium interconnect business.

Hmm, but you probably can't *feel* music with headphones.

  6. I'm sure that they would, but the damn things are *huge* and the wiring runs
all round the room. So I think I'd rather not disentablge them.
Norf Wes' Lunnon, near Brent Cross, so a bit far from Sheffield. Which is a
    nice city, ime.

Oddly enough, you know that sound tone they're trying out to discourage
brats under twenty five from loitering? They reckon very few people can hear
it if they are over thirty. I can, she said smugly.

I'm no "golden eared" hifi buff, but the idea of choosing a sound
system by listening to how it sounds errr, sounds sound. IYSWIM.

I'm coming to the conclusion that a lot of hifi "quality" comes down
to what sounds nice to an individual, and that can only mean that all
HiFi systems distort the signal to some degree, so we may well like a
sound that's actually not the pure recording. Beauty is in the ear of
    the beholder.

The trouble is, there may well be background noise in the shop and the
accoustics may make actually telling whether you'll like it at home
    rather difficult.

Add to that the problem of the shop sound system not containing
exactly the elements that you have at home, makes it even harder.

After saying all that, IMO there is a *collossal* amount of bollocks
sprouted about hifi systems. Thousand quid cables and blue CD pens,
    FFS!

    Fair point
Shame that. I bought much of my kit from Enfield branch of something or
other. I'd recommend them if you can make the haul.

Out of interest, d'you kno what frequency?

Only I'm fairly sure that my hearing stops at 14KHz, and even then I
have to wind the volume up.

-6dB? Sod that. Must be at least -12.

Kids here are using that as a ring tone as the adults cannot hear it.

  15. I don't. It was an old news story on Radio IV - and apparently, they are
doing a mobile phone right tone based on the premise, too.
I just asked himself - he thinks it was 16K? I need to google on it.

  19. I think I've heard of them before - I shall go look, and many thanks for
that. Acksherkly, Himself thinks we bought something from them eons ago. So
the fact that they are still good has to count.

    Ta!

  20. I wondered if they actually worked. Ranks up there with underseat bass
