And you hardly even saw them. The ones you came down on were as
nothing by comparison with the _good_ roads.

Me too. Lots. Twinned with Cheltenham, by strange coincidence.

Thanks, number 3 does sound pretty good. I've got a bit of a thing for
mountain lakes, and prefer lakes to the sea for windsurfing (can't
stand bloody salt water & sand!).

Of course the one absolutely vital criteria is broadband so I can VPN
to Brum. Any idea how well rural France is serviced in that respect,
    generally speaking?

  4. And that concludes the Old Essex blokes application for
    Voice of Reason...

Dunno about generally, but it's available in our village, and all
those (even smaller ones) around us. There's a useful page that allows
you to test a given locality or phone number for eligibility
    http://www.agence.francetelecom.com/eliadsl_ftbynet/html/popup_eli.html
and Annecy is certainly covered, as are all the villages around there
    that I've tested.

I was just thinking of the mountain road up and over the Col from Ste.
    Mairie. Enjoyed that, I did.

Yeah, you said. <looks at map> Ahh, given that the tunnel was closed I
guess you came throw St. Marie itself, then over and down to
Ribeauville? It's not the road I thoought you were on about and I'm
not sure I've actually ridden it myself. It does look nice and twisty
    on the map.

If you'd known the tunnel was shut you could have taken a slightly
more southerly route to Colmar, from St. Dié over the Col de Bonhomme,
from where the 'Route des Cretes' (lit. Route of the Peaks) can lead
all the way down through the Vosges, perhaps 100km, all on roads like
the one to which you refer. Nice, it is.

Being the beaming ray of light that I am, what happens if you get made
    redundant?

    Probably the same as what happened when I was made redundant last year;
I spend 7 months out of work living off savings until I'm down to my
last penny, then get taken back on as a contractor.

    <cue violins>
The first few weeks of last year were pretty rough. I lost my job,
divorce turned nasty, got very ill, 3 mates killed in bike crashes, 2
small claims court cases, car caught fire etc. All of which led to a
    slight change in attitude.

If I lose the job again I'll just have to deal with it. But I'm not
going to let that possibility stop me doing something I want to do,
unless it turns from a possible into a probable. It's hovering
somewhere between the 2 at the moment, so I won't be going anywhere
until things settle down a bit.

Now _that's_ what I call a positive attitude. Go for it - don't put
off doing now what you'll regret not having done in ten years time.
