I was going to tell that to the Janitor in his BMW estate last night if
he had pulled me over.(1) I wonder if he was trying to look "cool" or
just trying to disguise the fact he *was* a Janitor so that people drove
over the limit. Or is that me being cynical?

    (1) I was doing about *cough* mph in a 30 [1am, nice wide road] when I
saw his bonnet appear, turning out of a petrol station 100 yards in
front of me. I slowed down to 35 and carried on at that speed and he
sat a safe braking distance behind me for the next 1.5 miles.
And yes Ace, fog lights are bloody annoying even though they may be
showing up more of the road for him!!

  2. Poor visibility? Darkness or thick fog?
No major point other than correctly aligned standard lighting on my
cars (and bikes) always manages to light everything I need absolutely
fine without recourse to inapropriate lights.

    I never mentioned darkness.
Mine too. The standard fog lights are part of that package, and can be
really useful for filling in the corners where you don't normally need
to see except in poor vis, as I said. I don't recall anywhere talking
    about inappropriate use.

Bloody hell, why am I getting a bum rap over this? I never suggested
that anyone should use them except in reduced visibility.

I'm with Ace on this one. On a pitch black country road a full set of
main beams to illuminate the road ahead and fogs to illuminate the edges
of the road is definitely an advantage.

I'm fairly sure that SAABs don't. As I've sold mine I can't check.

    Wrong. Octavia = Golf

    Passat is a Superb.

    Bora = 4 door Golf.

    So, same floorpan.

Of course, this was until the Golf V was launched, which doesn't yet
have a Bora equivalent, and the new Octavia is, I believe on the Golf V
    / A3 platform.

Not quite. If that's the case then I'd better go and buy some Bora
    badges for my Golf.

Bora = Golf with a boot, not a hatchback. Bora and Golf are both
available in 4 door form (not including the rear hatch on the Golf).
    If you say so.
Possibly. IIRC the Skoda Superb is based on the Passat/A4 floorpan.

If you've got a MkV Golf, then it's one generation ahead of the Bora.

A hatchback is generall referred to as a 5 door (or 3 door), a 4 door is
    generally known as a saloon.

So, Bora = 4 door Golf.
I think you'll find the Golf is referred to as a 3 or 5 door hatch.
The MkIV Golf and Bora were on the same platform.
The Passat shares it's platform with the Audi A6.

Perhaps you'd like to read up on this subject before picking holes in
    other people's posts?

It's about cars, Steve, and worse than that, it's about dull cars. I
don't spend my own money on them and it's not like I really give a ****
what Skoda has the same floorpan or seats as a Golf or Bora, as I don't
need to know this shit to earn a living any more. I wouldn't waste my
time reading up about it just to try and win an argument with an anorak,
however, it offers me some mild amusement on a damp bank holiday Monday
to see you get so wound up about it.

Nice way to try and dig yourself out.

If you don't know about the subject, then why try to prove someone
    wrong?

    Who's digging out.
I did prove you wrong, a Golf is a Golf, a Bora is a Bora. A Skoda
Octavia is not a 3 or 5 door hatch, it has a boot and is based on a 4
door VW Bora floor pan, *not* a 3 or 5 door Golf floorpan.

I did a little light reading and found there is a 227mm difference
between the overall length of a Bora and a Golf. The Octavia is quoted
as being even longer than the Bora by 131mm.

Still saying it's a *Golf* floorpan then?

    You, on the evidence below.
    A shared floorpan, different shell.
I think you'll find it is.... it's there on the Skoda website.
It has a hatch, a very large hatch, in fact.
Floorpans on the Golf / Bora are the same - or were, up to the Mk IV
Golf. MkV based 4-door saloon (Bora replacement) isn't here yet.
    Length doesn't matter, wheelbase does.
    Yes. Because it is.

They all have a boot, the Octavia being a 5 door hatchback.
    Bit rash, wasn't it?

  19. Erm, not a three-door, but definitely a five-door hatch, and no boot,
    I'm afraid.

But it's a pretty pointless argument about some pretty unintersting
    cars.....

That said, I might be in the market for a Superb....

A nice cheap way to get your hands on an Audi A6, if that's what floats
    your boat.
