Got a 12 inch titanium laptop here, not quite the latest.

    1) How can I only use an external monitor? I want to use it with a 1280
screen, but it always limits it to the internal 1024 screen. The only
option is to extend the desktop, but I dont want an extended desktop

    2) This may be answered with the first Q. How can I tell it NOT to go to
sleep when I close the lid? There is no energy saving option to prevent it.

Both of those are amazingly easy to under Windows - ah I see.

Is this where I put in a smug look? :)

It's easy - took me all of 30 seconds to work out.

    Open display prefs.
    Click on 'Arrangement'
Drag menu bar on the pictorial over to the (larger) external display.

This assigns your desktop to the external screen. The internal screen
won't power down, but will display the display prefs. until it's sleep
    timer kicks in.
You can't - one of the reasons a Powerbook is so quiet and battery
efficient is that it has a very efficient cooling system, which allows
convection via the keyboard. Closing the lid will overheat it.
