FOAK: European tour

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by M J Carley, Aug 21, 2007.

  1. Don't be racist - other cultures are just as bad. The only reason the
western nations have a lead on it is because of technology - not some
    innate badness.

The lead in technology is due, in part, to European savagery,
    c.f. weavers in Dacca.

Krausers old fitting kits did indeed fit just about anything, and
rather well too. I have personally transferred an old set of Krauser
panniers from a 400 Four to a GT750 to a DR350 (believe it or not) to
    a TDM850.

  5. Europeans by no means have a monopoly (or even a lead!) in savagery.
Read about how people like the Assyrians treated their enemies!

    Human nature is pretty universal.

Or the Israelites, for that matter.
I didn't say Europeans were more savage than anyone else.

I didn't: it was a response to the statement that the technology
improved the savagery. The reverse is also true.

  10. Ah - I misunderstood. But then my statement wasn't that technology
improved the savagery - it merely enables it to be spread around
    better.

A bit like environmental impact - people have this image if primitive
tribes as 'living at one with nature' until you point out the many
cases (post-ice age Europe, Iron Age Britain, Easter Island[1], North
America) where non-advanced societies have caused mass-extinctions of
species by over-hunting or destruction of habitat. All the technology
enables you to do is do it more quickly.

    Phil.

[1] Under debate - although it's pretty certain that they did destroy
the environment of the island pretty thoroughly it's debatable whether
it pushed them into social collapse as was first assumed.

  11. I don't recall reading it - I'll see if I can locate a copy.

And looking the book up online I can confirm I haven't read it - but
what I wrote above seems fairly self-evident.

A few years ago, I flogged quite a few Krauser sets. A pair of
panniers, with key(s), frames and a load of brackets still fetches
£100 all day long. Best time to sell is early summer, when people are
    planning their touring trips.

Frames and boxes, but no mounting brackets, will still be worth £50+.
Individual old panniers, no keys, sell for about a tenner each at
    jumbles.

The keys are a bugger - those old Krausers used a stamped metal key,
rather than a cut one, and they're sods to duplicate. No bugger has
blanks, but I found a key place that adapted something else to suit.

The Logis de France place. The owner moved his car out onto the street
so I could park the bike overnight in his garage, too.
