Are there any national, reputable chains worth using?

We're planning on replacing the sliding door in the dining room with
proper opening doors so we can have a cat-flap fitted.

I currently have a shortlist of 2: Anglian and Everest.

I did think of Safestyle, 'cos they're always advertising on telly, but
their irritiating adverts put me off a tad.

Find a local independent firm through personal recommendation. They will be
cheaper and the fitters will be direct employees rather than sub-
    contractors from Remploy.

  3. Everest really pissed me off, when we re-glazed the Chateau, by trying
to employ all kinds of nasty salesman tricks.

It's hard to get a personal recommendation when you live on a new-build
development. It's not like anyone around here has needed the services of
    a double glazing company.

Why not just use a local firm who can point you towards other work
    they've done in your area?

When I had a load of windows and doors replaced a few years back I
wasted time with a couple of nationals but the people who gave the
best response and appeared to be the most interested in getting the
    work were the local firm.

Some neighbours of mine a few door away had their windows done by
Safestyle... they have them back about once a month to fix the latest
    batch of problems.

I agree with wessie - find a local company. They usually survive on
their reputation. If you can't get any recommendations ask to see
examples of their work and ask to speak to the householder.

Yeah, have thought of that. It's the lack of anyone to actually
recommend a company around here [1] that puts me off doing this.

I'll check the Yellow Pages and get a few out to quote on it.

[1] No, DNC, it's not all first-time buyers, but, we're Cardiff commuter
belt, so I don't actually know of any neighbours who've moved here from
    the immediate locality.

This is where regular visits to a local pub frequented by tradespeople
helps. I've yet to find one near here and I'm only starting to discover
    decent tradespeople after 2 years.

Where I lived near Ross, the pub I went to was used by several small
builders trading entirely by word of mouth referrals. I used to find out
which sub-contractors they used for plumbing, windows etc. You'd never know
that most of them existed as they did not need to advertise.

Aye, IKWYM. When I worked in Haverfordwest, the bar of the hotel I was
staying in was some sort of unofficial 'Chamber of Commerce' meeting
every evening between 6pm and 8pm....

Sadly, the Coopers Arms attracts more students from the college than
    anyone else.

    SteveH tossed off:

    Agreed.

The nationals will send round some twat in a suit who will quote you an
astronmical figure, then a humungous discount, then ahve to speak to
his area manager on your phone. The final price will be far lower than
their original price, but still far higher than a local company.

Having got your order they will arrange for a bunch of subbies to do
the work, then not GAF if you have a problem.

Look for a localally based company, get their man in and tell him from
the off that you want a descent price, not a bunch of old bollox.

Worked for me after a third visitation from a national, TV advertising
type shower. Salesman was good, price was what I wanted and service
    was brilliant.
Yellow Pages could be a good start, a local firm is less likely to shit
in it's own back yard, oh, and ask for references.

  13. Err surely contacting the local Chamber of Commerce might not be a bad
    place to start?

That's what I did and the chap was superb. Father and son team, did
    great job.

I was recommended them by a neighbour, but I was given a raft of
references by him that I could have gone and viewed.

Just ask them for references. Simple as that. If they won't give
them, then avoid, if they do, go visit.

As everyone else says, use a local. I just picked one out the yellow
pages. They were 2 grand cheaper than the nationals, & the windows have
been in for around 10 years now without any problems.
