No, not "how do I transfer a domain between registrars". I know how to
    do that...

Mate of mine has a domain registered that we've been using as the
"entry point" to our little hosting cooperative and as he's not really
involved anymore, he'd like to pass the domain to one of the remaining
members. Trouble is, we don't have any idea how to transfer a domain to
a new owner. Anybody here done that before?

It's been a while, but get in touch with the Registrar. (If you've
forgotten[1] whois is your friend :).

If it's a .co.uk, I think it has to be done by Nominet. <googles for
    example>

[1] Yes, the person I dealt with had know idea who their Registrar was.

  3. Yes.

It involved me sending faxes to Nominet asking them to transfer the
domain and then the owner of the domain (the administrator handing the
winding-up of the previous company) also sending a fax authorising the
    transfer.

    See here:

    yes.

    If it's a .co.uk it's fairly easy.

If it's a .com or a .net or a .org, then expect to be dealing with
    twats.

Don't nominet issue a "certificate" for the domain name which
has a form on the back for transferring ownership?

they used to, but as Phil says, I don't think you can use them any
    more.

Last domain I registered, I got an email from nominet to create an
account. The domain is associated with that account, and I can do stuff
to it from there. I've not looked into it beyond clicking on the link,
which was valid for 30 days or something like that, and setting my own
    password.

  10. I've transferred several .coms and .nets without trouble. It's an
automated process, you don't have to communicate with the twats
    (hopefully, they are indeed twats).

Last time I did one it was just:

    Old admin unlocks domain;
    New admin requests transfer via registrar web site;
Old admin receives email requesting authorisation with a link to a web
    page to enter it.

I don't know about .org, that's a different registry. .biz is an awkward
process involving authorisation codes and faxes. I don't think I ever did
    a .info.

As mentioned above, it's a .com so hopefully this'll work, thanks.

    yes, that's fine.

Now, try doing it if you can't contact the old technical contact.
