porl left a note on my windscreen which said:
I'm not sure how much use a blind guide dog would be.
I would suggest that we are all slaves to one end or another and that
you're offering questionable terminology. Do you also think that we
shoudl all be vegetarians since breeding animals for food is also
    slavery (murder even?).

While factually true in the definition of slavery, yes, our dogs are
'slaves'. But what does the word mean to the dog?

Do wolves below the Alpha consider themselves slaves or do they function
the way they do because that is what comes natural to them? Societies
rules and terminology aside can you prove I have any more ownership over
my dog than an alpha dog would have over it's own pack?
Are you arguing that since dogs have no clue as to what the word love
represents that this excludes my description of it applying to them. I
doubt you or I could agree on the term between ourselves so I use my
definition to apply to what I see in my animal.

Your first question in the paragraph above renders the rest redundant
since if neither of us knows for sure (which certainly is the case) then
your opinions on the matter have no more weight than mine. OTOH I have
more experience and chose to apply my definition from my experiences to
what I have observed in my dog. Love, affection, familiarity - whatever
you wish to call it - she expresses it.
Logically, a fair opinion which, although I don't agree with, I respect.
May I suggest that since you have apparently had limited experience with
pets you may not be able to view the relationship objectively. And I
acknowledge the same applies to me.

We nearly always walk the dog off lead. She has plenty of opportunity
but never chooses to do so. Also the back garden wall is only about
4.5ft high. Easily jumpable by a Cocker.

  9. Yep. It's not a high frame rate rip though, which detracts
slightly. If this laptop ever boots up again, I'll watch the
    rest of it...

No, the use of an electric collar is inherently wrong, and should never
be used to train a dog.

There are plenty of better methods that can be employed in training,
but initially I would suggest taking a look at yourself first rather
than trying to 'shock' the dog into doing something you want it to do
because you cannot be bothered to spend the time and effort required in
training the dog to behave with a humane method.

There is a saying 'there are no bad dogs, only bad owners'. Whilst I
don't think that this is 100% correct I don't think it is entirely
    inaccurate, either.

You've got a breed of dog that likes to work, not a lapdog that is
there to be picked up and put down on a whim when it suits you. Do you
spend enough time with the dog providing it with the mental stimulation
    that it requires?

I would suggest you seek assistance from a training/obedience class in
order to learn the best methods to train your particular dog and
resolve the problems in a humane manner, here's a list of places around
the country so there should be someone near you.

Unfortunately for you, the training will require a lot of input and
patience. If you aren't prepared to take that responsibilty perhaps
you should consider getting a goldfish instead.

    It's only a fucking dog.

I used to have a little brown bitch who used to do something like that
but fortunately I was taught how to do sign language that dogs can
understand by a collie who was an absolute fucking master of
communication so I managed to convince her to growl instead, most of the
    time.

Every now and then she would still go into one but by and large it
seemed to be local scrote types who were the trigger so in the end I
left it to her own judgement.

I dunno, I read a couple of replies, then looked at how many there were
on the thread and decided I CBA to read the rest.

I'm home early cos I've got a face like John Merrick [1] and had to go
to the dentist [2], if it wasn't for that bloody big tree at the end of
our garden I'd be able to sit out in the sun.

[1] No chance of me being no 3 in as many days around here, I couldn't
even get my lid on this morning.

[2] Privately cos I can't get an NHS one in these parts. Antibiotics,
painkillers and mouthwash, and a dent in the purse not far off ?50.00.
    <sigh>

Well I *am* trying to present an argument here. No point in not talking it
up is there? And besides they may not be building pyramids but they can or
can't breed on our say-so, they eat what and when we decide, and are
supposed to provide comfort whenever we choose. They can't leave home, they
get tagged, collared, etc. They might be well-looked after slaves but
there's not a lot of self-determination in their lives is there? And why
not? Because we've bred them to be gibbering retards who left to their own
devices would probably scratch themselves to death. Humans are genetic
    nazis.
    How convenient for us.
I'm prepared to concede that that might be the case. Of course, given a
choice he might prepare his own kind, prefer not to have his nuts chopped
off and prefer to be able to molest anything it feels like doing but not
being given a choice we'll never know.
Don't know where you've gone with that one. Crazy bastard.
