Can I reserve IKEA until I think of something funny?[1]

[1] I may be gone some time.

porl left a note on my windscreen which said:
I could do. But TBH I'm a big softie when it comes to animals. The
problem is this agressive behaviour also, on occasion, carries itself
into the house when people the dog isn't familiar wil comes to visit.

This has occasionally resulted in a light nip on an ankles but is very
worrying when the dog is faced with toddlers who's faces are in easy
    reach.

The thing is that she is practically perfectly fine when she's running
around in the playing fields, off-lead but she seems quite terratorial
when in our garden - overly so.

We use electric fences all the time with goats and pigs and it only
takes a couple of shocks to ensure they stay in the right area to keep
them safe. I am wondering if the same could be applied to the dogs
    behaviour.

A possible alternative to otherwise more extreme measures of training
this bahaviour out of this dog is, realistically, destruction if she
actually does turn and bite someone.

Aside from working dogs, the world would be no worse off if no dogs
    existed.

Mike left a note on my windscreen which said:
Pippa doesn't often bark when someone tries the gate or knocks on the
door. She normally just gets up to check whoever it is out and then
wanders back to resume normal sniffing around the garden.

She's only ever a problem when it's someone beyond the back wall or to
other dogs when she is on-lead.

  6. Its a dog thing. Goes with the pack territorial instinct. And as such
it's pretty much impossible to get rid of.
Unlikely. Most likely it will make her very very confused and
frightened. And she will still bark cos confusion and fear make the
    pack instinct stronger...

  7. Many people, myself included, find that owning, looking after, and
loving a pet improves their quality of life in many hard to quantify
ways. More people happy with their lives is good for a society.

The South Korean 'Dog & Chip' shops would struggle, that's for sure.

LOL "Overly"? According to whose stipulations? You do still have the
contract the dog signed when it came to live with you don't you?

"Hewwo doggy. We're taking you home to love woo vewy much. And if you don't
like it we're going to electrocute you until you do. And if you attempt to
live according to your nature or the nature we bred into you we'll beat you
to show how much we want you to love us back because, somewhat bizarrely,
although we respect you as much, if not more, than our fellow human beings
(who do Bad Things in the world) and although we would never have condoned
slavery, we want to own you. And we're going to do this to the end of your
    life."

I think you should change "dogs" to "people".

On a more serious note, pets[1] can teach children about things like
responsibility, caring for others and even the inevitability of death.

[1] Dogs might not be the best pet for this mind.

Ginge left a note on my windscreen which said:
Interestingly she doesn't exibit the bahaviour when we are in the back
garden ourselves. I think this is because she doesn't consider herself
as the 'top-dog' in the family and therefore not responsible for the
shooing away of strangers when we are about.

She has been trained with the firm belif she is on the bottom rung on
the family. While this may seem to others that this sounds like cruelty
I don't belive it is. I understand that dogs should not have an
elevated sense of status in the family to ensure that dogs don't become
possesive or aggresive and start, literally, taking over the household.
On this count she understands that everything in the house in mine. Her
toys, her bed, her food and water - all *mine* and not hers. Because of
this she is entirely trust worthy even if our 7 year old takes her water
    bowl for a refill.
I don't dish out slaps regardless. Initially I will use 'treat'
training either with praise or actual treats but if that fails I will
slap a dog on it's nose to ensure it knows who's boss. I don't think it
cruel to train a dog with the occasional slap provided it's not hard.
I'm not adverse to slapping Lauren, our daughter, on the hand when she's
    misbehaving either.

Jeremy left a note on my windscreen which said:
Actually we've done this too. Well, a plastic bottle with a few stones
inside sometimes does the trick. Pippa was given to us due to the fact
she is gunshy and she still doesn't like loud noises much.
