Ben Blaney left a note on my windscreen which said:
As is riding bikes, watching TV, playing sport etc. What makes pet
ownership inherently 'bad' and those other physcological comfort
    blankets OK?

I think I see your point. I'm just not convinced it's a negative aspect
as you appear to belive it is.

But anyway, this is USENET - "no-one wins".

They're not necessarily ok. Riding a bike isn't always an emotional blanket.
It might be if the biker rides because they purely enjoy the social aspect,
aspiring to be part of a 2 wheeled clique because they're unable to form
relationships or feel comfortable in any other social setting, always
talking about owning imaginery bikes and stuff. Watching tv is fine but
watching Big Brother and thinking that the characters are the viewer's owns
friends, or watching sport all day to avoid the family [1] or be part of the
male machismo ideal is not right.

[1] Obviously if they have a dog on their laps then this counts as "quality
time with the family" so it's ok.

I don't think you do because you keep asking the same question.

What? I'm not the one trying to claim a rewarding emotional
relationship with a motorcycle or a television.

I was going to get an imaginary Hayabusa but didn't think I could afford
    the insurance.

I did, but instantly got hammered by the Inland Revenue.
Just my luck - I came under IR35.

porl left a note on my windscreen which said:
You see owning a pet as a means to subdue some sort of physcological
need instead of addressing the need directly.

I'm asking why a pet is a 'bad' method of addressing this desire.

Sheesh. Do I have to do all the work here? Imagine a different
    government too.

You said it was bad because it was a human construct. Aren't these
examples of human construct for our enjoyment?

Oh dear. You seem to have a very pessimistic imagination. For
christs sake don't think about sex - you might end up with Anne
    Widdecombe.

Hooray. For once my imagination came up trumps. I got Mo Mowlem.

Ordinarily it wouldn't merit comment but it's a life we're talking about.
And *before* you start up on the "but you said it's not welfare at issue!"
let me qualify that: it's a life that _you_ supposedly hold so dear that
_you're_ electrocuting, desexualising, brainwashing (sorry "training") and
generally bending into shape to fit _your_ needs in return for which you
open a tin of chum and tickle his tummy. It seems a strange way to express
the "love" and "companionship" that is apparently the requirement, if that
    truly is your motive.

Mo Mowlam was a fox when she was younger.

Constructed (i.e. physically fabricated) by humans is not the same as
    "a human construct".
