FOAK: Dog training and 'shock' collars

  1. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Dr Ivan D. Reid"
    The slaves are revolting.

I reckon my Jack Russell terrier is more intelligent than some people I
know. I've seen him exhibit reasoning behaviour, and he has learned to
    deliberately deceive.

porl left a note on my windscreen which said:
Yes, porl, you said this before.

I'll try to make this a little bit clearer for you. For whatever reason
people own pets they do it ulitmately because they *want* to.

Now, can you justify why your opinion is any more valid on what other
people should or should not enjoy without refering back to enslavement
or animal welfare since this, apparently, is not your point.

  4. I suspect most dogs would struggle with the concept of choice..
Which just goes to show how little you know about dogs. Mankind has
been breeding some of them (working dogs like collies, alsations, and
some of the small terrier types) specifically *for* intelligence..
Who is this 'we' you speak about? Are you speaking with the royal
perogative? Cos you certainly ain't speaking for me..
Well - the people who started the process 10000+ years ago did. Having
a dog might mean the difference between survival and death. After all
it could help you hunt, defend your flocks against wolves and protect
    your family from other predators.

Oh - and if the nights are really cold you can use it as a hot-water
    bottle..

And cats mean that you don't lose half your harvest to mice and rats..
Which is quite a sad comment on how you see your life. Or something.

  5. It's this new concept called irony. I'm sure you have heard about it..

And I was making a point. You see keeping pets as useless and
anti-social. I see other things useless and anti-social.

Hello? Didn't porl just write, "Depends whether the other hobbies also
include manipulating the lives of animals."?
    ^^^^^^^
So slavery and welfare aside I shall address the point of why I want to
keep an animal - because I enjoy it. Can you critise why someone should
enjoy owning a pet without resorting back to mentioning slavery or
    animal welfare?

The contract between dogs and humans is very old and is based on mutual
    benefit and survival.

The dogs get the leftovers of the cooked meat and kids for the puppies
    to practise hunting on.

The humans get an early warning system on the camp perimiter and
assistance in driving mammoths into stake filled pits.

In the modern world this has become refined to:

Dogs get grub delivered in cans and cardy boxes.
Humans are marginally less likely to have the house burgled.

Yep. Much of the advice from the font is well taken. I'm looking at
myself first, going to have a look at some obiedience classes etc.

Bloody hell - I hope not. Certainly not an animal behavior expert at
all. But the above is pretty much what I have read on the subject from
people far more experienced than I.

Excellent. You might want to try taking the dog to some dog obedience
classes after you have sorted yourself out.

Champ left a note on my windscreen which said:
That sounds like a welfare/slavery question which, I'm led to belive, is
    not the issue here.

I could respond by asking if you think a wolf is any less enslaved to an
alpha wolf than a dog is enslaved to it's owner but I have the feeling
either you or porl will play, 'It's not about the animals' card and
    we're back to the above question;

"Can you critise why someone should enjoy owning a pet without resorting
back to mentioning slavery or animal welfare?"

I wonder how many of your dog-loving friends would agree with that.
They seem conveniently intelligent when you wish them to be and then not
quite so intelligent when it doesn't suit your argument.
Humans. Us. I'm not talking specifically about you.
No doubt. And I'm sure Vlad the Impaler thought it a cracking idea to shove
burning sticks up people's arses but that would be frowned upon today. We no
longer have to hunt, defend against sheep or whatever anymore.
Not really, I don't keep pets. If you want to make this personal Phil
instead of talking about humans as a whole then I guess we can do that.

Let me reciprocate in making things clearer for _you_.

    "Want" is not a reason.

I want food because I'm hungry or greedy. I want to ride motorbikes because
I enjoy the challenge, the sensation of forces, the puzzle element of
negotiating traffic and obstacles. I want to continue dicsussing this
subject with you because I have a superiority complex/am bored/enjoy making
    my brain work, etc.

Why do you want to own pets?

Yes, because the issue is why you should want to. What do you enjoy exactly?
