....namely ones that don't give you the money they say they have - anyone had
any experience of being short changed by one?

If so, how honest are the banks - I drew out what I thought was £120 today,
(with a receipt to prove it, thank feck), and it only gave me £90.

Been advised to contact my own bank, even though the machine is owned by
    another.

    TIA

It *shouldn't* be a problem, but it might be easier if you had a
witness to the effect. As it is, the machine will be over by any
amount(s) that it has failed to give out, thereby corroborating your
claim. Unless of course the next customer is the lucky recipient of
the ?30...which is where the witness comes in handy.

The one I worked for a decade ago: Entirely honest.

My guess across the banking spectrum today: Entirely honest

I was shortchanged £10 a few months back, was recredited it next day - they
just need to cash up the machine at the end of the day to recognise it's
over and tally that with your reporting a shortage in your own wallet. The
only way I think you could get caught out is if a lightfingered member of
staff nicked the over and then reported the machine correct, but it's not
    very likely.

JackH emerged from their own little world to say
I got ripped off by an ATM - can't remember which bank owned the machine
but it was not my own as they don't have one in Ross on Wye.

I contacted my bank, Alliance & Leicester, and they refunded the £20
shortfall immediately with the understanding that they reserved the right
to claw back the money if the ATM owner called me a liar. I heard nothing
    further about the matter.

Yes, I do wonder if that happened.

Oh well, threats of Ombudsman etc., will ensue if I get no joy.

To be fair, it's the first time I've ever had any aggro with a cash machine,
    like this.

    Ok.

I rang the Halifax, as it was their machine - they said contact my bank...
which when I was directed to the right department over the phone, greeted me
with a message to the effect of 'go away, we only work orifice hours'.

Shall contact them in the morning.

Oh well, given I have an account with them, shame I didn't bother to draw
any out of their machines last week... ;-)

P.S: Others in these parts, will flame you to feck and back, should you
choose to continue to 'top post'.

    Cheers

Happened to me a month or so ago and the advice was not to worry as the
machine will actually recognise that it has short changed you. They didn't
even take any details. Despite my scepticism they were absolutely right and
    the transaction was corrected.

Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Ferger
Most ATMs are reconciled once a week.

Or that certainly used to be the case when I worked on them ten years
    ago.

Differs between banks perhaps. I worked in branches in the West End a bit
longer ago than this, and most of them ran out of cash every couple of
days, so they were reconciled daily.

SP secured a place in history by writing:
Extremely unlikely - the machines have always been designed to ensure this
can't happen, short of you actually leaving money hanging out of the slot
(and even then, it's sucked back in if the machine can manage it).

Ever since there have been cash machines, there have been claims that some
customers have been diddled. When I worked for a bank, the perspective of
the staff on this was one of extreme scepticism (the staff note, not the
bank). And given that there are probably half a million cash machines in
the world, you'd assume by now that any fundamental design flaws would have
    been spotted, highlighted and fixed.

Which means that the balance in the machine is higher than it should
be, hence it shouldn't be a problem in reporting the incident and
    having the account credited accordingly.
