FOAK: Decent email client for Windows?

I don't like Outhouse Express and nor do I like Outlook, which I have
    festering on a disk somewhere.

I've been using Thunderbird as the least of all evils, but I'm not too
happy with its IMAP handling - it tends to miss updated folders on one
server, despite me doing all the usual unsubscribe/resubscribe bollix.
Evolution on Linux doesn't have this problem so I think it may be an
    issue with T-Bird...

So, can anyone recommend a decent Windows Email client that does
support message threading properly (which rules out the MS offerings
IMHO) and has *good* IMAP support?

  2. The obvious one to try is Eudora, though I have to say I use Thunderbird
with no problems at all, against uw-imap at home and MS-Shitty-Exchange
    at work.

Pegasus Mail. I use it for IMAP all the time, have done for years. Sadly
not in development any more but I can's see anything else it really needs.

I'm with Timo, in that I find Thunderbird doesn't always update IMAP
subscribed folders on one particular server promptly - but in my case
it's only used for held mail so that isn't a problem.

I'll give that a shot - I've tried it before but wasn't overly
enamoured of the userinterface but I'll see what I can do.

Otherwise I guess I better figure out how to use the various Emacs
    email clients under Windows...

That's a bit overkill, in that case I may as well fire up a Parallels
session and run a full Linux in there. Like I do under Linux when I
    need Windowsy stuff.

Well, I just tried it and promptly remembered what I didn't like about
it - it doesn't have a threaded view.

I've also downloaded Mulberry, which I've used before and that seems to
fulfill most requirements. Provided I can get it to handle the five or
six different email identities I use from this box here, that is.

    It is 'different' certainly.

Different doesn't bother me, especially if it allows me to use the
    software more efficiently.

The trouble is that this is the third or fourth time I've tried to use
it and I still can't find the knob I need to twiddle to get it to sort
emails by thread. Given that some of the mailing lists I read do make
the daily UKRM onslaught look like a five-monkeys-wivva-typewrite
effort, I'm screwed without that ability.
Heh indeed. It's about the only thing that I haven't used Emacs for so
    far.

And to make that a little more precise, I know that it's got the option
to 'sort by thread', but it's useless in my context as it seems to give
me a flattened view of the thread.

don't know about the IMAP bit but I like turnpike and it threads mail
folders well. apart from the inbox that is.

  13. I have no way of testing these (and fortunately my days of email server
    administration are long gone) but:

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/How_do_I_check_for_new_messages_in_other_folders
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/IMAP:_advanced_account_configuration

    Any use?

Anyway - certain servers and clients are better than others at
implementing the protocol standards, although as I remember the protocol
definition itself is a bit of a mess.

Ignoring the fact that you don't /like/ Outlook, is your festering copy
an old version? Threading is much improved from 2003 onwards, & seems
    to work fine.

I've used them all and I keep coming back to Outlook. Sorry to say

I'm getting a little fed up with it too. Ever since version 2, the Junk
mail controls don't work all the time when running with multiple mail
boxes (fails to move them to trash, despite marking them as junk), and it
keeps screwing up my Local trash folder. Of course, these things could be
    related.

I've got to use 2003 or newer at the client's site and am aware of the
conversation bit mentioned in the above like.

However if you're trying to follow discussions that meander about like
UKRM ones do, with tens to hundreds of messages, I still find them hard
    to follow.
