FOAK: DAB & Radio over DVB - same?

All the DVB (digital TV) receivers I've seen also let you receive digital
    radio.

Is this the same digital radio transmission you pick up with a DAB radio?

The reason for the question is that we can't get a DAB radio to pick up a
signal anywhere in the house but radio from our DVB box is crystal clear.

If it's the same signal then the only issue is aerial height.

I don't believe so, at least I can't receive some of the DAB stations I
get in the car with my DVB box. I'm guessing that the 'digital radio'
sent over DVB is just DVB-T encoded audio with no video component.

    No.
Some of the stations are the same programming , but they are on totally
different frequencies and are independantly broadcast.
Oh and the audio quality is arguably better on DVB

Aerial height is an issue, as is location.

I dunno if it is right but 10db loss through a brick wall rings a bell.
    I could be wrong.

Same stations in many cases, but no, it's a completely different technology
    standard.

Radio over DVB-T is just TV with the pictures turned off, and is broadcast
over TV-ish frequencies. DAB is a dedicated radio broadcast system.

Both technologies use MPEG audio compression to squeeze more stations into
less bandwidth, but there the similarity ends. Neither offer as good quality
as inteference-free FM radio, but for speech it's perfectly fine.

DAB is still fairly patchy in many parts of the country. I struggle to get
any signal in London, although being in a semi-basement flat doesn't help
    matters.

    Can't be the same,
    digital radio in kitchen
computer on radio station in spare bedroom
freeview receiver on radio channel in front room

noticeable difference when walking from room to room listening to the same
    channel.

For music DAB's a lot better than FM in some real world usage-
especially since the modulation technique is (relatively) new so there
aren't (yet) pirate radio stations running DAB. However this attunes
completely with your 'interference free' point..
Motoroway coverage of DAB seems pretty solid in the south.

You're right that they're not the same, but then that's hardly surprising
given that they're coming through entirely different distribution networks.

IIRC even with DAB, if you had a houseful of different DAB receivers you
could expect a different delay on each receiver, depending on the internal
decoder architecture, specifically how much buffering and error correction
each receiver might try to perform. This isn't an issue with FM receivers.

  9. The stations I'm interested in are only available on AM, DAB, or
the Internet. DAB is miles ahead of the AM reception (especially since
that is mono, of course), and a bit ahead of the Internet stream, it seems
to me. But I've got cloth ears...

It depends a lot on the bit-rate used for the broadcast. Unfortunately
DAB audio quality has got a bad name, as most of the stations use
stupidly low bit-rates as its cheaper for them. I think the jury is
still out on how good a sound the DAB technology could produce if
used properly. Unfortunately I doubt we will ever get the chance to
    find out.
