FOAK: Colour Printers

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Wicked Uncle Nigel, Jun 27, 2009.

  1. Right, Mrs WUN's management research report is ready to be handed in,
    wiv pretty graphs and everyfink!

But our shite old printer is doing a pretty pony job of it. So:

What's a reasonably cheap, super quality colour printer that's cheap to
run, easy to feed, doesn't shit in its nest, and (importantly) can be
purchased from PC World tomorrow morning?

I have one of those, which has a faulty print head, so replaced it with
the IP4500 [1], which is working well so far.

I chose it because it did duplex printing, and does CDs as well. Not bad
prices for carts, and they last well, so do work out quite economical.

[1] it was about £90 for a new head and a set of carts, which I needed,
so I spent £60 on the new printer instead.

  6. How about emailing it to Kinko's or the like and collecting it
tomorrow, printed on serious paper, spiral bound with a clear cover
for about five quid? That's what I'd do.

  7. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique,
That's a definite possibility, but she's assembled it into half a dozen
separate documents[1], which complicates the issue a tad.

You're also suffering (a little) from "Septic Syndrome", where you can
expect to do this kind of stuff, and it just happens[0]. Back here,
they'd just **** it up. No really, they would. We'll print it, and the
blokes at the local Prontaprint[2] will bind it. If they're on a roll,
they'll get all the pages in the right order.

[0] I remember being fucking *amazed* when I impulse bought a really
neat (and somewhat large) ceramic pot in a Californian garden place. I
suddenly thought 'HTF am I going to get this home?'. A quick visit to
Mailboxes Etc, about eight bucks, and it was packaged so well the 'plane
could have crashed and they'd have found it next to the black box. In
    better condition.

    [1] Women, eh?

    [2] Or whoever...

What OS? Lexmark and Canon are both crap for linux. Epson, HP and Samsung
seem to work fine with windoze, linux and mac.

A swift glance at my headers would reveal that I am running Windows.
(and saying "windoze" still makes you look a bit silly, BTW).

Yes, that's right. Mrs WUN runs a copy of Linux called "MrsWUNLinux"
that she wrote herself, because she was unhappy with the printer $upport
from Mickey$oft. She's written a device driver for the printer that we
use (using a C compiler that she wrote one afternoon), but it seems to
have a couple of problems with some colours. So we're hoping that
someone will have come up with a better solution.

Thursday, Friday or Saturday would work best. I'm off all next week and
making a determined effort to get my pilot's licence. Sunday I'm on a
plane to Malaga (with someone else driving). You have my phone number,
    yes?

or if you prefer a laser printer then get the Samsung CLP315 - Colour Laser
Printer, which seems a bargain at £99. It's what I would get should my
current Samsung laser printer decide not to work, after having 3 years of
heavy use and the last 4 years in semi-retirement.

Just wait till it runs low on ink and you really really need to print
something. Does it fucking tell you, "I'm running low". No, it just
    refuses to print.

My Lexmark P6350 all-in-one tells me I'm running low on ink, then
continues to print at least four full sheets every day for the next 13
    weeks.

Avoid the new Kodak printers, bought one recently and it went back
    within 3 hours.

Replaced it with an Epson BX300F which worked straight out of the box
    and gives pretty fine results.

Whatever you buy, buy a spare cartridge or two. The ones that are included
    are generally not very full...
