Suggestions and recommendations sought on colour printers, preferably
    laser.

Home use so mainly homework, school stuff and light duties.

I'm thinking about this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164297 which
seems about right and the toner seems reasonable.

    TIA

Where "reasonable" == "might as well buy a new printer"?

Fucking hell! That's stupid. Might as well just through out the
    printer each time :-/

Yeah, I looked into buying a colour laser for my sister's church
printing, and it's only marginally cheaper than inkjet. That's using a
10k yield cartridge every three months or so.

The other church does have one in fact, and the cartridges are up to
    £130 each colour.

I did a little working out of costings for printing the respective
church magazines. The mono one I do here works out at about £12 (paper
and toner) for 28 pages (A5 booklet), 170 copies. The colour one at the
other church, similar amounts, is nearer £90. Both HP printers.

Depends on what you have. I have a Canon iP4500, and I've not had to do
a head clean yet in 18 months.

Epsons are different though, and yes, you'll waste a lot of ink getting
    the head to clear.

Consumer market printers are cheap because the consumables are eye watering.

Talk to someone like www.inkspotstores.com/index.php about what they
recommend for ease and cheapness of refilling. Ideally a brand that isn't
    chipping the cartridges.

I've got 2 printers. A basic Brother 2030 black and white Laser
Printer I picked up from Staples for £45.. Generic brand toner refils
are £22 ish and good for about 2500 pages. Then an old HP Inkjet for
the occasional need to print colour.. Refills are about £10 a pop at
    the local Cartrige World.

Hmmm yeersh but I've got to say that colour laser print on the right paper
    is rather good

When they bought it you couldn't get any, it was a new model and they're
chipped. You can get them now, they're still £60 each though. These only
    yield 2-3000 pages.

The old LJ4100 I use for the other magazine does 10,000 pages for under
    £20.

If you're after a B&W laser, then just get an old HP LJ off fleabay. I
got a 5N for about £40 years ago. Since then, it's had a set of rollers
(about £20 and an hour) and a genuine toner (about £15 off fleaBay). It's
    bombproof.

Nah - they get you there as well

Laser printers (and most ink jets too) come with half capacity
cartridges, so you only get 50% worth of toner with a new printer

Yeah, but for that kind of thing I'd just go into the office, or use a
reprographics place. I don't print enough to justify owning such kit.

Beware colour lasers. The work one chews through the colour toner even
though it's set to monochrome most of the time. The toner waste bin is
just full of unused colour toner. Apparently it's a "feature". You
also have to replace all the shiny cylindrical things (can't remember
the name of them now, photocconductor units or something) whether you
    use colour or not.

Kodak inkjet printers seem cheap to run, in fact it's their selling
    point. Check 'em out.

The reason they may be cheap to run is because they don't seem to work
in the first place. I bought one(1) last year and had to return it the
    same day.

When returning it the bod at the desk pinted me to *seven* others that
had been returned over two days, all with print head problems.

I bought an Epson BX300F instead which has worked perfectly from day one
and compatible inks are about £12 for a full set.

    (1) I believed the marketing campaign(2)
    (2) More fucking fool me

I'm thinking of getting the Canon Pixma:
    http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.207-2280.aspx

Seems to get reasonable reviews and at 50 nicker off, it's not a bad
    price.

Anyone got any thoughts on Canon printers in general?

    They're up to the ip4700[1] now, and that's 500 better. *500!!!*

It's another option too, as I don't necessarily need an all-in-one, but
    I did fancy wireless.

Tesco have the previous model (ip4600, duh!) for £78 and according to
the review, the ip4700 is only a minor upgrade.
