FOAK: "Chrome_launcher.exe", WTF?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Wicked Uncle Nigel, Apr 1, 2010.

  1. Suddenly, this evening, half the websites I try to open (in IE 8) seem
to want to execute "chrome_launcher.exe". I am politely telling them to
**** off, then the websites fail to open.

Google is (hah!) not my friend on this.

    WTF?

Oddly, I've just uninstalled Chrome, and it seems to have stopped.

  4. Personally, I'd be uninstalling IE [1] not Chrome

    Kev

[1] Except we all know how well M$ have embedded IE into Windows that
it is a pain in the arse to remove it and if you do it is even more of
    a pain in the arse.

I still like Chrome though. Light footprint.

I'm sure you would. And if Chrome ever gets to the point where two of
the websites I use daily actually work in it, I'd certainly consider it.
Really? I got this funny little update message last week asking me to
choose from various browsers. I chose IE.

Oh, and typing "M$" makes you look like a bit of a tosser.

  6. Really? Interesting. I've had no dramas yet and find it very quick
with a low footprint. I was a longterm Opera user then switched to
Firefox when Opera got bloated then to Chrome when FF managed to bloat
    itself to death too.
Your choice. I find it very clumsy, and if any browser is going to be
targetted by hackers, guess which one it will be?
You're so kind. Usually I get "total" instead of "a bit".

  7. I looked at that and saw "once you install this update it can't be
removed" so I clicked the "hide this update" box.

Now, every time I go to Windows Update I get a big angry message,
"You have chosen to hide an important update. Are you sure?" <sigh>
Microsoft, what part of "hide" do you not understand?

  8. Yeah - it's like the little messages that come up "You have plugged a
jack into a socket". No, really? I hadn't noticed. Or "There are
wireless networks near you". Fine, and when I want to hook onto one
I'll go looking for it. But in the meantime STOP WITH THE FUCKING
    POP-UPS OK?

I use this little registry change.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
    "EnableBalloonTips"=dword:00000000

  10. I love you, can I have your babies?

    Kev

Mind you I'll take the offer back if it doesn't work :p

  13. Right, forwarding that to myself so that I remember to do it on my
nettop -- that bloody balloon comes up before and after every
videoconference -- and I have one every day of the week nowadays! ...and
of course I get notified that there is/isn't wireless available twice a day
too, as I use cable at work and WiFi at home...

You don't have one that kills "FOREX" do you?

It stops *all* the balloons though. That may not be a problem for you,
    but bear it in mind.

I'll only say that I never think to myself "I wish I had a baloon pop
    up for that."

I DO still get popups from other programs, such as Vuze, when needed.

Battery life? ;) I only mention it in passing as I have no balloons either.
    As you should.
