The Gas bloke who earlier suggested a loft installation is returning
tomorrow because I was not satisfied with some of his answers. Here are
    some examples;

ME: As there are existing services; gas, water etc., could you briefly
explain why we could not re-use the same space in the kitchen for the
    boiler?
HIM: Unable to buy old gravity feed conventional flued boilers

which is not strictly true according to what I found on the web site of
the office of the deputy prime minister.

ME: I didn't really follow why it wasn't possible to fit a new
condensing boiler in the space vacated by the old one, given that all
the utilities are in the wall.
HIM: Unable to site boiler in old position due to flueing options.

well it'd have been nice to have some more detail.

ME: Do we know for sure that the gas pipes in the house are of the
required diameter for the new boiler? If not, what is the plan for
    routing new pipe?
    HIM: Yes it will be.

errrmmm actually it doesn't appear to be. The old gas pipes are 15mm and
the boiler maker states 22mm. Anyway Anne now remembers that he said
that he was going to reuse a water pipe to carry gas from the kitchen to
the loft. The water pipes are also 15mm (or maybe 1/2 inch).

Am I being paranoid or is this beginning to sound a bit cowboy-ish?

Tim scribbled on the back of a napkin:
If you're paranoid, then I'm paranoid too. I certainly would suggest
that after this installation you probably don't want to smoke inside
    the house.

    More wodscallop.
Mine weren't. We had the 15mm and had to refit some as 22mm to join to the
    new boiler.
    I hear jingling spurs.

It all depends on whether you have sufficient points to qualify for
exemption to fitting a condensing boiler [1]

If you don't, then by law, you have to

[1] - well, technically high efficiency

Ah, yes, that I think got said in the previous thread a bit back. The
codswallop referred to not being able to buy the things. Any decent Bloke
should be able to ensure you can get exemption.
    And they die very young....

And I see the sparks flying off them, as the cowboy is heading towards
that bank with his wads of cash.

Well he's due back today at 10:00 and we shall see. I am quite prepared
    to show him the door.

Ah well, that was better. Looks like the gas bloke was just not a good
    email writer.

He's going to do various tests on pipes and wires. He has contingency
plans for the installation. Much better to see the chap face-to-face.

Now to get another quote for comparison. Already have one from BG, but
it's good practice to get three at a minimum.

Perhaps he's a better paperback writer.

    *nice*

Maybe the initial communiqué wasn't too clear due to industrial

He should have gone down the telegraph road, perhaps. But at least the OP
asked his brothers in arms for advice.

We had someone in to look at our CH a couple of years ago who informed
us that we would need a full new CH system installing, and that the
boiler would need to go in the airing cupboard in the bedroom (next to
the hot water tank) which seemed a bit odd. Trawling through various
sites on the internet seemed to verify that this was, indeed, a daft
    suggestion.

Anyway, a friend of a friend called round, confirmed that placing the
boiler in the bedroom was indeed a daft idea, flushed the whole system
out to clean it and it cost just over ?200 - which was a lot better
than the cost of replacing the system )
