WMP doesn't support iPods out of the box though, does it?

    Any ideas?
I think iTunes is brill, all 4 of us have an iPod and it works very well for
us with our very different tastes.

Although I don't personally like iTunes for Windows (although I do like
it for Mac) it's very good at ripping cds to mp3s. You could use it just
to do the ripping and then get rid of it once you have finished ripping.

If you do use iTunes though I would suggest that yuo go into the advanced
settings and increase the quality it rips at and set it to rip to mp3 not
    aac.

H has just bought me a 120gb iPod to replace my much loved 30gb. Should
take me a while to fill.

Can I just plug it into iTunes and let it sync all the stuff that's on
    the PC/other iPod?

Uncanny. H looked at our daughters Nano and thought she'd like one.
Once it was suggested that her audio books and language lessons would
fill it in an instance the purchase of a new 120gb for me was in the
    bag :)
    Excellent.

I suppose the question is then what's the best way to manage H's iPod
and it's contents. There's a spare PC in the house which could run
iTunes or can I run two iPods [30gb & 120gb] off one iTunes?

    http://www.getsharepod.com/ is also rather good.

Seconded. The only problem is that it's a resource hogger. And I'm not
sure about the privacy aspect. And I don't like the fact that when you
buy songs from iTunes, they're protected. And this new fangled "let me
choose your music for you based on what I see already on your PC" is
    not very nice.

'part from that, it's not bad.

Look for Anapod Explorer as an alternative to iTunes. It works well
with the "older" ipods. Not the new "touches" unfortunately.

Media Monkey is good, and it works with the Touch and the iPhone.

I used to use Anapod before I got a Touch, but I prefer Media Monkey,
    particularly for tag editing.

  11. Nice - I just myself a 16Gb Nano and have ransacked the ex's music
collection. Got nearly 1000 tunes on and still have over 10Gb left
    free.

Goes nicely with the Mac :)

I just turn off the auto-sync and drag'n'drop albums I want manually.
I've got an iPod Nano and an iPhone connected to my iTunes.
iTunes is the same on both platforms.

Not really. I wouldn't want all of my music of either device,
although it could all fit on them (both 16Gb and iTunes library is
    running at 11Gb).

A lot of the music is sentimental but not stuff I really listen to.

I think you can achieve that using playlists. Set up the playlists to
reflect the different devices and auto-sync them.

Easily done. When both are plugged in, each will appear on iTunes'
left-hand pane, as so (I only have one iPhone, of course)..

Logically, each device should have its own 'submenu' of things to sync.
It should thus be possible to choose each one, tick or untick what you
want on that device, and hit 'sychronise'.

Let's imagine your 60 GB iPod is called 'twat', and your 120 GB iPod is
    called 'wanker'.

You plug them in. You'll see (I assume, as I've never plugged in an
iPod in, but it'll behave similarly to an iPhone) 'twat' and 'wanker'
    appear.

You click on 'twat', and then on the right, you should see the same tabs
    as here ..

    <http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3080/3151129209_7383e94c0f_o.jpg>

If you click on 'Music', you'll see ..

    <http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3122/3151145197_0103e44349_o.jpg>

... which of course, is the same as the playlists in the previous shot.
You then tick the stuff you want on 'twat', and click on 'synchronise'.
Then you do the same with 'wanker'.

It's in fact a more intelligent solution that firing the lot onto your
iPod, and then asking you to make playlists on that device. That's how
it worked with my last phone, a Sony-Ericsson K-something. This way,
your iPod (or iPhone) only contains the music that you've i) placed into
playlists and ii) told iTunes that you specifically _want_ on that
device. Any stuff that you don't listen to on your iPod (like I have
very little classical stuff on the iPhone, as the ambient noise in Paris
makes it not worth my while), but a lot on the Mac.

So the iPhone isn't cluttered up with music that I'll never listen to on
    it.

Gosh. A gadget thread that I'm actually interested in and is relevant
to me now: I fired up iTunes for the very first time today. A late and
wholly unexpected[1] present arrived this morning.

[1] iPods of any sort (I think mine's probably the most basic model)
were always something "other people" used; I never considered owning
    one myself until now.

Do you find navigating to a paticular artist and album with the little
wheel is a bit of a pain to do whilst driving? I reckon I'd get on
    better with push buttons.

Maybe there's an easier way to do this that I don't yet know of.

The playlist gives you your subset of data. So you have a different
    playlist for each device.
