quite simply, a Mitsubishi Galant cannot be considered to be in the
same class as a BMW 5 series, as the demographic group who would by one
car would not consider the other; this applies to both cars.

Anyone telling you that the Galant is a luxury/executive car in the
same class as a 5-series is almost certainly someone who can't afford
    to buy a new 5-series.
    HTH

Personally, I wouldn't want one of either.

Looks like a photoshopped Citroën XM.
A Rangie cabrio would be brill - a sort of poor man's Bentley Continental.

....although the actuality looks a bit cack:

    *cough* A Jag X-type /is/ a Mondeo in a morning-suit. So your
improbably comparison isn't as far off as it once would have been.
Unbelievably as it might at first seem, I've never driven /any/ BMW
car. I don't tend to hang around with the sort of people who'd buy BMWs
    ;-)

    [snip M5 eBay dodginess]

I would have a problem buying any old-ish performance car that I
couldn't have professionally inspected, and I'd want a fair amount of
    provenance, receipts, MOT history etc.

    know.

a demographic group is a multi-dimensional contiuum, not a pigeon hole.
    Both bought from new?
but man, you're like school on Sunday.

The Galant does have anywhere near the range of engine options that
the M5 has; the prices are way apart; the performance is very
different (see engine size); the overall size is not the same.

So *how* is a Galant in the same class as a BMW 5 series?

**** me - what an ugly piece of shite. How the **** can you get as
    little as 280 Hp from a 5.8 litre V8? Even the very-softly-tuned 4
litre straight six in the Cherokee makes 280.

I saw a "customised" Chrysler Grand Voyager in the car park at Asda[1]
in Harlow last week - unfortunately I'd left my camera phone on charge,
as I'd love to have taken a pic. It was dropped right down on 18"
alloys (looked like the front would snag on the arch at anything
approaching full lock), stupid body kit, *insane* Escort RS Cosworth
rear wing, blacked out windows, the paint job was white, with lots of
black "tribal tattoo" style markings all over it. It was possibilty the
    wankiest car I've ever seen.

    [1] yes, I know.

  10. I've driven a couple. A 325i and a 328i. Fast revving and quite quick
for a car, both of them. There isn't much else they do (the 328i handled
ok) that most other cars do.
    You're not all bad then.
My ol' man just flogged his 328i. When I asked about buying it he said
something along the lines of wanting it to go to a *good* home.

The Mondeo V6 is a better car than the X-type V6. That's from my
friend Mark, who you met, who's in the motor trade.
The only BMW I'd have is the 2005 M5.

You can get 280bhp from a Hayabusa's 1300cc without much trouble.

without trying to disagree, you must be talking turbo or supercharged
    for that power-cubes ratio?

He's probably right. However, despite the fact that the X-type screams
"wannabee", the other option is a Mondeo. Again, I'd not want either.
As you may have noticed, I've dithered over replacing the Cherokee for
years now. It's because when it comes down to it, the only cars I
*like* are 2-seater or 2+2 sports cars. And I can't justify one until I
move house to somewhere with off-street parking.
I don't "get" performance saloon cars.

The only one I'd really be interested in, but would never actually buy,
would be a concourse-condition 2002. I mean the car, not the year.

Speaking of which, there's an X-reg 4.0l "Classic" at a dealer's just round
the corner. It's £5995 - which strikes me as pretty cheap. Is that the
    going rate for these things?

"approximately". Mileage seems to play a big deal, as does how many
toys it has. For my S-reg, 32000 mile example, I was offered 3.5-3.75
for a dealer trade in, and told to expect 4.5-5 for a private sale.
Mine's in particularly good nick though.
