So basically you don't really have to work hard or smart at all as it's all
relative to the cheese-eating wasters around you. So your original assertion
that working smart was equable with working hard as far as your employers
are concerned (because they are paying for skills/experience) is a lie. My
point is that "working smart" isn't an appropriate decription when you're
working below your full capacity and the OP's point about lazy IT workers
is, in your case, on the money, no?

stating that I don't /have/ to work hard to achieve a particular goal
(in this case outshining my colleages), doesn't imply that I'm not
actually working to my full capacity.

In other words, I'm working harder than I /have/ to, because I'd
    rather be busy than bored.

Er.....yes it does. Unless you're saying that you wouldn't achieve more by
working smarter AND harder or unless "working to full capacity" means just
generally motoring along with no special effort. It might mean that, I'm not
up on IT lingo because it seems you're contradicting yourself all over the
    shop.
Eh? That's not remotely synonymous with anything you've said. Are you
talking rubbish or am I just out of my depth?
