  1. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the

The only thing wrong with towpaths is the number of anglers littering
them. Ffs, what's the point of trying to catch something you can't eat?

It's not widely known that Fox can actually be very tasty. You just need
to rub it with a little wild garlic, marinade it in cuttlefish ink and
    then eat it raw.

Hmm, that rules out most forms of public transport - and also explains why I
was a lousy slip fielder in my cricketing days. It could also explain the
    low crime clearup rate.

I knew I wasn't imagining them (bottom picture)
    http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk/ll/ll55.htm

    and a description taken from:
    http://www.heavyhorseworld.co.uk/horseboating.htm

"The dangers for the horse if it slipped and fell in the cut were serious
and constant. Even the smallest canals were two or three feet deep at the
edges with soft silt below that, and getting the animal out again before
it became chilled, exhausted or drowned was the boatman’s constant dread.
Some waterways had proper ramps built down into the water precisely for
this emergency, and a few others had a coping stone missing every mile or
so with a removable wooden board across the gap. This gave the horse at
least one step below the water level to get himself out, but no doubt
sod’s law would ensure that wherever the horse fell in there wouldn’t be
a convenient answer to getting it out nearby"

That's not too bad - sucking the ingested water out of its arsehole is
