  1. Exactly so. I recall the digicam v. film test they did - what a load of
    cock.

Not a problem as it's now sold. Do you want me to let you know when I
    have another available?

Having never watched the show, what was the test?

  5. A Nikon DSLR v. a film cam (unrecall which) loaded with ISO400.
If the test was supposed to demonstrate ultimate resolving power of
either, the film body should have been loaded with ISO100, or to make it
    a real challenge, Gigapan.
Needless to say, the Nikon won in this absurdly biased test.

Wasn't the film camera the film equivalent Nikon or something?
Velvia would have got my vote, but I suppose the average Joe would have
    used some 100 film.
Like most of their so-called tests.

The mountain race one was a fucking joke and I was that wound up I almost
    emailed them about it.

So, on par with a Which? test then...

I can see a proper high-end DSLR giving a film camera a good run for its
money, and possibly even winning when taking convenience into account.
But when it comes to the best possible quality in every situation, film
still wins by a long way.

  8. Iirc, yes - a decent pro model.
I suggested ISO 100 to even it out - Istr faster speeds on digis are
just amplification of the sensor base sensitivity, of around 100.

I'm pretty sure Adox CMS-20 would have shown the dSLR a clean pair of
    heels.

(not Gigapan as said, it's also sold by somebody else as Giga-something,
    which I mis-recalled)

    Indeed.

Remember that famous 1990 shot of the Wayne Gardner highside? Shot
    (well, obviously) on transparency film.

    This one:

    http://www.sportbikeworld.com/gallery/data/522/3604wayneGcrash.jpg

That was actually a crop from a small corner of a picture depicting
other bikes. David Goldman took the pic and bunged the trannies off to
whichever paper had commissioned them (MCN, I think), without
examining them closely, and they called him back and said: "Do you
know you've got Wayne Gardner doing the most amazing highside....?"

    And he didn't.

Hard to see a digi getting that high a resolution - the area was maybe
one-eighth of the total 35mm area. Certainly under a quarter.

I've got a D100 and an F100. We could do a test ourselves, except the
D100 is a bit vieux chapeau now. My D200 wouldbe better, or a new D300
    better still.

  11. Likely Leica design, possibly made by Cosina/whoever. The whole thing's
a mish-mash of unknowns and best guesses.

  13. In defence of dFEis, I have no hesitation in buying dFEi batts from
7dayshop - always worked, no problems and they take back /refund if
necessary (not that it has been, yet).

  14. I intend to give this Adox a try, sometime soon. Got a few film bodies
here, and I'll have to sort out which is the best resolving lens I have.
Whatever one it is, it'll fall short of the film's capability. 800 l/mm.

I've used some Adox films and they're rather good, even with standard
    developers.

took a blunt brush and painted...
The negatives I'm slowly scanning in at the moment all seem to be about < 100
l/mm. Very disappointed in the camera.

A Konica upper range "P&S" bought back in 1980 IIRC.

It's not a dedicated slide scanner, so won't be as good as one.

  19. From what I've found the Epsons have real scanning res of about 2000+,
nothing like the claimed figures. 2K is ok for Medium and Large Format,
so I'm happy enough with that, but it's a misleading piece of
    advertising for 35mm use.
If I had a load of 35mm to scan I'd look seriously at a used Nikon
Coolscan, or possibly one of the Plusteks but I'd find out for sure what
users' experiences are with them and if the figures are real.
